In 1932, New York got its first vigilante in the form of the Flying Fox. Another important figure in the Great Superhero Boom of the 30's, the Fox was notable for being an impressive superhero who relied more on his ingenuity and skill than powers. Much like many other heroes, he left a long legacy with more people taking his mantle than any other hero.

The Flying Fox was really Richard Canton, a wealthy pilot and adventurer who earned his fortune through his discoveries and travels. In 1929, he decided to search for his biggest discovery yet: the lost city of Shambhala . Through his research, he was able to find that it was located somewhere in the wilderness of China near the Himalayas.  Believing that he triangulated the possible location, he packed his bags and headed straight to his biplane to cross the oceans to China.  After a long ride, he found himself caught in the center of a bad storm that destroyed his blades and forced him to make a crash landing as he was aprroaching the border.

Richard survived, but found himself lost in a gigantic forest and a with decimated plane. He ventured deeper into the woods with hopes of finding civilization but found himself deeper in the wilderness and at lost with no sense of direction. He wandered aimlessley until he found a large wall belonging to the side of a mountain. Remembering his original mission, he was determined to climb the mountain and find the city. It was painful, but he eventually reached the top in an exhausted state and collapsed into the snow, waiting for the cold to kill him.  What he found instead was a grand gate becoming visible right in front of him and opening to welcome him inside. Richard mustered the last of his strength and stumbled into the gate and collapsed in its warm light.

When he came to, Richard found himself in a council room filled with men dressed in ceremonial robes. The monks informed him that he now stands in Shambhala, but cannot leave. Richard was excited to learn he had made the discovery of the city's location but had also learned that the elders in charge wished for him to stay and learn their ways in science and magic as a reward for his survival and determination. Richard accepted and was escorted to his living area where he would be taken care of. While it was unheard of for an interloper to stay in the city, the monks believed that Richard could be a tool to fight evil in the outside world for it was his destiny.

For years, Richard became proficient in advanced science, combat, stealth, and illusionary ability. When his training was deemed over, the elders released Richard back into the outside worldm, who thanked the elders for allowing him to stay and swore to never reveal the existance of their city. The elders thanked him and allowed Richard to leave through the very gates he was found at. Richard found himself back on the mountain, but used his training to descend down it and trekked out of the forest into civilization where he was able to find a telephone to call back to his home. It took some time but Richard was returned to New York with the story that he was lost in the woods and fought for survival and that his journey was a sham. He had also announced his early retirement, choosing to live as a socialite until his money ran out.

Unbeknowst to the world, Richard never stopped training in his manor and had big plans for his new skills. He converted the bunker of his home into a secret lair and laboratory and had a new custom biplane hidden nearby. He also crafted a long cloak made of a bulletproof fabric that he learned how to make and started buying experimental gadgets and tools such as grappling hooks and smoke grenades. Taking inspiration from the bats that used to fly around Shambhala at night, Richard Canton became known as the Flying Fox!
