That is such a rare shot - yay! Love it.
We actually had a family hatch 9 this year, but there are a lot of territory battles going on, and they were driven into the river way by a younger couple with 4. I can't go check on them, being laid up with the foot surgery, so I will just have to hope they make out okay. All of the back ponds have lost their cygnets to snappers. I hear they took out a 45 pound snapper last week from the front pond - but I know there are larger ones.

many thanks its about the same here too, we had a family of 9 too, its down to 3 now though!!!!! we have another
with 10 and 5 all good numbers and by the looks of the losses its a good job they start so high with the amount
that they lose. we can't understand it as we can only think of Foxes as the predators really for us.
Those snappers must be something else 45pound!!!!!!!! they must need some food i bet, and Cygnets
must fall to them for sure. How are the feet going are you on the mend?

Minks? Weasels? Raccoons?
Feet are slow had a little bump with a bacterial infection am on super antibiotic, the one they use for anthrax. That is probably good, since I can't run from any terrorists.
Only did one foot, because I just couldn't face being that dependent. Will need to do the other next year. :\

We have none of those predators, like i say they have very few big predators. Im no expert but chatting with
the Birders they spoke about the Cobs actually killing there own to keep numbers balanced, i know of other
species that do that and makes a lot of sence, especially as we have 40+ birds on the water which is a lot
so i could beleive thats whats happening.
Sounds a good idea having one foot done first for lots of reasons. hows it all gone? super antibiotics!!!!!!
bionic woman LOL

Well the antibiotic gave me a reaction but I am better and glad of it. I get bandages off and walking shoes this Friday, hope they will let me walk a little after that
