These three shots in this series have been excellent.

How do you manage to get so close? Are you sitting in a blind, or just using good camouflaged clothing - or do you ever use decoys?

Many thanks well this series has come from the rescent weather, the snow and ice. on a normal day these birds never really take off or land close to the bank. but with the ice forming over 90% for a few days it forced them into the narrow channels of water that were not frozen. And with other birds
doing the same there was much more activity so i new a few takeoff points and where they would most likely land. i do use camouflaged clothing but thats about it really. i never chase birds i've learn't its best just to be in there area and just mingle, that way they realise your no threat and are less bothered about me pointing a camera at them and clicking. I used that technique with a Pied wagtail the same day, he came within feet of me while i was
sat down having a coffee, I got a shot i've wanted for years.

Smart move then to make the most of the circumstances and to pick the right position.

Understanding and knowing the behaviour of your waterbirds improves your chances of getting great images like these.

yes exactly!!!!! thats my approach, and being close and around the same area's lets me know all the good lighting spots
and best exposure windows for different times of the day. i just move with the action. One shot im waiting for is a Sparrow Hawk
that uses a hedgerow where i shoot my crow and magpie friends, seen Her 5 times now and had in the viewfinder twice but she's so fast.
but from my own experience i will probably get her sooner or later, i hope so

Haha cheers cracking little birds thatare very twitchy indeed, another plus for the snow and ice. they have been restricted to the outsides of the
Res in the pools, giving me better chances.

True snow/ice does do that - glad you were able to catch them
