Description The NWR S6 is a class of 0-4-0 steam locomotive built for work on the NWR. Production began in 1913-1930, and was resumed from 1939-1942.

In 1912, the Ulfstead & Bluff's Cove railway was the busiest it had ever been. Their fleet was mostly made of trams, old 4-4-0's, and extremely old 0-6-0's. So the controller of the railway (which at the time was Warner Larson) went to Crovan's Gate to order a tank engine who was strong, but was fast enough to take passenger trains on occasion and had a short wheelbase for shunting. The answer was the U&BC G4.

The first engine was completed and trialed in 1913, with incredible results. Th engine upon first glance was tiny and weak, but that was soon proved wrong. The engine was very strong and was recorded to have a tractive effort of 19,500. That was incredible, even 4-4-0's of the time were weaker. The engine was wasn't very fast but was was fast enough to take local trains. It also was suitable for shunting as well, a perfect engine for the small line. In the years leading up to 1915 6 more were built.

In 1915, they were passed into NWR ownership. Production was still in full swing, they proved useful in harbours, shunting yard, and branchlines. Production was stopped in 1930 with over 200 built. This was because many were sold to various countries and industries all over the world. In 1939, production was presumed for WWII sand was ceased in 1942. Resulting in a grand total of 400 built (mostly for other countries) , and 163 (most in other countries) preserved.

The one shown here is NWR No.123 "Lyla Francis" (her freinds call her Lyla), the original engine finished in 1913, named after a female workman on her line.

I have many classes to talk about but, that's it for now. Hope you guys enjoy!
