1 Riddler: “What do you mean? What do you want to coerce him into?”
1 Joker: “I am confident I can do this. By the end, he – all of the superheroes, in fact – will lose their ability to distinguish good from evil.”
2 Riddler: “Impossible. That’s… that’s stupid. No one could do that.”
2 Joker: “It’s just a matter of your presuppositions. They all want to believe in redemption stories, or that there’s more to this grubby world than just the evil they can see. Superman always believes the best of people.”
3 Riddler: “But he’s not an idiot. He knows the staggering list of crimes you’ve committed.”
3 Joker: “I have displaced Hitler himself from this spear. Snuffed out whatever was left of his soul. The heroes alive during World War II will be able to confirm that much. I, the Joker, killed Hitler. And what kind of man would do such a thing? More people have yearned for that than have yearned for Batman to kill me.”
4 Riddler: “They’ll think evil people do occasional good acts for their own ends.”
4 Joker: “They will not. Not an act of that magnitude. Can you explain it, in detail, in a way that does not leave the doorway open to moral ambiguity? To the possibility of a kind of altruism?”
5 Riddler: “Yes. Easily.”
5 Joker: “But will you still be able to, when this caper has come to fruition?”
6 Riddler: “What are you planning to do, you inhuman…”
6 Joker: “Mark my words. They will make assumptions about why I took this spear. And the world, the heroes, will lose their ability to honestly evaluate evil. They’ll assume there’s good in it. And what that does to them… in future encounters… well, I can work with that. I play the long game. I’ll chip away at him yet.”
