I'm not a professional but I know some artists use Zbrush, Sculptris, and/or Maya to sculpt 3d elements.

What's chicken scratching? This is so cool, I love how you do contrast between really black parts and bright red glow.

chicken scratching is basically scribbling quickly until something comes out. like how chickens scratch the ground till they find a worm

I guess it might be something like that but I never heard of that phrase. Thanks

this is just so amazing. i have one question, where all these steps done in a seperate layer? like did you use 10 layers for the whole painting?
π: 0 β©: 1
theDURRRRIAN In reply to flametwerker [2015-01-10 07:43:03 +0000 UTC]
nah theres way more than that. like the debris, the different layers of fog, all the glows and separated characters. i usually merge things down to one and paint on top but for big paintings like this i tend to keep everything separate for more control

Awesome..would like to know more between step 3 and 4 though..been really struggling to make my rendering smooth,clean & sharp looking like yours.Mine is always too.......................messy. ==;
π: 0 β©: 1
theDURRRRIAN In reply to R3X90 [2014-12-26 07:11:11 +0000 UTC]
haha if u wanna see messy just zoom into any one of my paintings. its all mushy and scribbles XD
as for the sharpness thing, if i work big like this i ususally keep everything on a separate layer, meaning everything usually comes out sharp. if not then i tend to work with 100% opaque brushes so i avoid a muddy picture. plus working at 100 is much faster for me
π: 0 β©: 1
R3X90 In reply to theDURRRRIAN [2015-01-05 13:41:54 +0000 UTC]
At least your scribbles has a purpose.Mine's just.............................lost and then *clicks New Layer & start all over again*. LOL
Oh,so that's how you do it.By sharpness, what I meant was like the "sharp edges" that you get. Thanks for the reply, dude.

theDURRRRIAN In reply to R3X90 [2015-01-05 20:25:12 +0000 UTC]
yea thats what im referring to. if u use the lasso to cut out ur shapes and 'fog out' the area behind it u get a sharp edge
and u have no idea how many times i have do overs while i paint

thanks well this is the extent of my workflow complexity. the more simpler jobs are just plain old painting and some photobash to speed things up
π: 0 β©: 1
LiewJJ In reply to theDURRRRIAN [2014-10-23 08:24:39 +0000 UTC]
Well, even if they are just plain painting and photobashing, we could still learn things from you such as your design choices and compositions and maybe even pick up your style of painting. But this is just me being greedy and leeching off of you. hehe
Kudos!

lol well either way imma still try to find a way to make it more interesting. if i just keep showing the same workflow it gets boring
as for design and comp, its a mix of practical knowledge, stylization and personal taste. plus if you have anything to ask send me a note or message and i'll try my best to help

Although, maybe some extra info like layer types and color balancing would be nice too if it's not too much trouble.

I jest. This is awesome. The final product is absolutely spectacular. Actually, just the first "chicken scratch" frame (by far better than anything I can do ) is pretty awesome. Great job!

yah well, by normal human standards that shit is NOT a sketch. Like, that would take me a long as time to do something like that :/ the skill feels

omg this is amazing! thank you so much for sharing it, i love to look at your mental process, it can really help and it's nice to see at what you think while you work (i laughed a lot when you said you rendered the character to have some company xD)
it's wonderful to see the choice of perspective and dynamics, same about the human element! wonderful work

Even if it's not a full tutorial, it's actually really interesting! I find it amazing that you sculpted the dragon in 3D so to use it in your composition. It's also a good idea to recycle textures for rocks and such. If you get enough you can build yourself a texture library to use in different projects. Great work!
π: 0 β©: 1
theDURRRRIAN In reply to NYANNOVA [2014-09-29 07:31:56 +0000 UTC]
thanks well im still building mine but generally i only use a few pictures constantly and skew it to however i want. the other textures are generally for things more specific (broken places/ruined statues, etc)
