I love the Sonic OVA so much; it's seriously one of my favorite Sonic media. But the ending always made me so sad.
Sonic wanted Metal to live, and Metal deserved to live, yet poor Metal dies anyway. So, I decided to try redrawing the ending! Imagine if in the end, Sonic ended up saving Metal. 
Part of the reason updates have been a little slow lately was because I'm trying to learn new techniques, and I can't really post my practice efforts. However, I think my practice is paying off.
I tried to make the background more believable with textures and lighting, and while it's not perfect by any means, I think I am making progress.I also do need to do more studies for Classic Metal Sonic. He doesn't look quite right just yet.

If this had happened in the OVA, I could imagine Robotnik gets Metal Sonic back and still says his line that he'll build an even stronger version which would be a great story arc if the OVA became an anime series.
The other alternative ending could be Metal Sonic getting the same treatment as Gemerl from Sonic Advance 3 where Metal is repaired by Tails and maybe gets green eyes to show he's good...

I loved the Sonic OVA too! I also thought the ending was pretty sad when Metal died ( he's my fav ) so this art is really how it SHOULD have ended, in other words, this art is the best.

I'm kinda tempted to try and write a canon divergence fic of what could have been DX plus how interesting would it have been to have metal sonic slowly but surely adapt more and more of his own personality using the personality core he got from sonic, and his own exposure to eggman's evil? Sonic hates eggman, surely metal would have adapted that out of sonics personality core

Honestly I caved and Iβm rewriting OVA from Metalβs perspective. I always thought it would be an interesting take to get into his headspace.
