I love the Sonic OVA so much; it's seriously one of my favorite Sonic media. But the ending always made me so sad.
Sonic wanted Metal to live, and Metal deserved to live, yet poor Metal dies anyway. So, I decided to try redrawing the ending! Imagine if in the end, Sonic ended up saving Metal. 
Part of the reason updates have been a little slow lately was because I'm trying to learn new techniques, and I can't really post my practice efforts. However, I think my practice is paying off.
I tried to make the background more believable with textures and lighting, and while it's not perfect by any means, I think I am making progress.I also do need to do more studies for Classic Metal Sonic. He doesn't look quite right just yet.

Oh yeah, I do have that draft! It's actually written on notebook paper, but once I type it up, I can send it to you if you wanna read it. Metal Knuckles plays a cameo role, but he is in one of the pages.

I heard the OVA was originally meant to be a pilot for an anime series, so I always felt that his death wouldn't be final.

That's how I felt too. It was such a classic, villain cartoon death that you just know he is going to make a comeback somehow.

Sigh... you know, I kind of already had this argument with you once before. Although the negative connotation of argument kind of sheds that first sentence in a negative light. Ehem, I just feel there isn't a clean way to just have Metal be "good" without a whole movie's length of time to actually explain it. Without more context, this alternate ending seems off (granted the OVA was a confusing mess of dialogue and plot, but the action was decent at least). Probably if you respond, I'll have to re explain myself. I'm prepared then!

It really was so super sad. D: I was always so upset that Metal ends up dead by the end of the movies. That's part of what inspired me to draw this; I like to imagine an alternate ending where Sonic manages to save Metal.

Metonic is one of those ships that sneaks up on you. At least that's what happened to me. At first, I was like, "huh that's interesting." But then after awhile I was like, "Yes this is now my OTP forever." xD

Thank you very much! Adding their battle scars was surprisingly tricky, but I tried my best to make them look worn-out.

Yeah, Metal could have had something good...
I mean, Archie did go with the original Metal becoming Shard, so it was a good start...maybe instead it would be just Metal.
But then there's the question of what Eggman could make that would be more of a challenge than Metal was before?

I think that's always the dilemma with Metal turning good: Eggman is just going to make another Metal Sonic, so you still basically have the same problem. I think that's why Archie turned Metal into Shard instead of leaving him as just plain, old "redeemed" Metal. Still, I do like to see Metal himself turn good without becoming another character. Maybe then Eggman will give up on Metal Sonics and just make another kind of robot.
