Description I've had a couple of people request I draw a scene from my fic Iron Oxide , so I decided to draw this scene from Chapter 11. I had to abridge it a little to fit on one page, but I was glad to finally draw this.

This page was also a composition challenge. I've been trying to make my comics look more official, but I still struggle with getting the panels arranged perfectly, as well as the perspective of the background. There's a lot of skills that go into making a good comic page that you don't realize until you try it. But I think I am making progress at least.

Iron Oxide was such a beautiful story, even more-so then SEGA. Chapter 9 and 11 were some of my favorite chapters, because it faced Metal's error head on. It's so sad, and romantic at the same time. I almost cried because of it.

Anyways, congrats on the support and stuff, and great job on the fic.

Plus, if it pulls more people into the ship, it means my plan is working xD Which part of the fic was your favorite, if you don't mind me asking?

I have many projects planned for the future, so I can promise I will keep exploring what makes the ship so interesting!

One friend I sent it to, she hasn't responded so I'm guessing she's still reading it (it took me 2 days to finish it). And with my other friend, whenever I talked to her about it, she kept saying how cute it sounded. I might send it to her if her internet will allow it.

And as for my favorite part... it's so hard to choose! There were so many parts I enjoyed, so I'll go with three.
3: How you managed to explain how Metal was able to morph into his other forms in Heroes since the game never did.
2: When Metal hugged Sonic. It was so cute, I couldn't stop squealing!
1: The first kiss. The first kiss in any and all fanfics are very important and you managed to build up to it perfectly.

I'm very excited to see what you have in store for Metonic! It's slowly rising to becoming one of my Sonic OTPs.

The fic is pretty long, so I can understand if it takes awhile to get through. Let me know what your friends think of it!

I'm glad to hear you liked those parts! I wanted to explain just what exactly happened to Metal in Heroes since it was always so vague. I liked the nanotechnology idea, so I went with it. And Metal hugging Sonic was so much fun to write. Poor Metal needs hugs.

I'm glad you liked the kiss scene too! I was so nervous when writing that scene because it is so important to the fic. And I didn't want it to be cliche or boring so I really tried my best to make it interesting.

Yes this is good. Metonic is such a good OTP. It is stuck in rarepair hell sometimes, but it's cute enough to make up for it.

I also sent my friend the Metonic Drabble Collection but she was too busy to read it. She's usually too busy doing things either way, but I'll ask her how far she in it and what she thinks of it!

Yea, Metal needs all the hugs. You write him as such a pure cinnamon roll sometimes!

If I had to rate your story, I'd give it a 9.5/10, mainly because there's not enough of punching Eggman Nega in the face.

It is slowly rising out of the pits of hell, and that's good. It'll be a while before it can catch up with the other popular pairings, though. My other rare pair is Espilver, those poor guys....forever stuck in rare pair hell thanks to SEGA not selling Rivals 2 in Japan.

TheEnigmaMachine In reply to Z0MGedELR1C [2017-07-30 16:44:18 +0000 UTC]

The Metonic Drabble Collection can luckily be read slowly since they're all short stories, whereas IO is a pretty big commitment. I hope she enjoys it if she reads it!

Lol the story does need more punching Nega in the face. Nega is extremely horrible to them and they're always so powerless to stop it.

I'm not sure if metonic will ever catch up with the popular pairings, but it has been nice to see it go from nothing to almost nothing. These two are pure and deserve love lol Espilver is also so rare too! I feel like Espio is generally ignored, which is a shame because he is cool and Espilver is a sweet pairing.

Ahhh thank you so much! I am so glad to hear that! Writing Iron Oxide was definitely been the most challenging project I've undertaken, but I am happy with how it's gone so far. It's a lot of work, but I really want to make each chapter as good as I can, and I've learned so much about writing from it. I'm glad you like the quotes too! I sometimes worry they are too out of context for a Sonic fic, but it's always fun to find famous quotes to foreshadow the chapter.

The fanfic brings out the geek in me!  I've always wondered how it might have been like to be a robot and everything you've written is amazing!  It gives me a nice look on technology since I'm into computers myself.  I'm also deaf with cochlear implants so you can say that I have "bionic hearing" so the part where you wrote that Metal Sonic's ears don't move is sort of like bionic hearing except that the microphones on my sound processors pick up everything in every direction.  Some sounds are a hit and miss just like Metal Sonic.

TheEnigmaMachine In reply to Moon41083 [2016-09-21 02:20:53 +0000 UTC]

When I set out to write Iron Oxide, I wanted to make Metal as machine-like as I could. I find robots are usually pretty badly written in fiction, so I wanted to write a character who was true to his robotic nature, while still being sympathetic. I have to admit, it's been harder than I thought, especially since the whole point of the story is to make Metal fall in love with Sonic. I do think Metal's character has drifted away from being too robotic in later chapters, and while this was part of his character arc, I sometimes worry I've let him become too non-robotic. My general strategy with him was to make him feel emotions around his objectives, but to never "overcome" them in the traditional sense. Everything Metal does has to be perfectly logical to him. The key is that what Metal considers logical isn't what a human would consider logical.

But that feedback about the "bionic hearing" is really useful! I try to consider all of the sense Metal would have, and how they would be different from a living creatures. It's important to establish how it feels to him to have different sense, so it's really great to get this feedback!

Although, I will say, I sometimes feel like I cheated because I gave Metal a sense of touch. He can't feel pain, but it would be too hard to write him if he never felt anything. I figured his systems have to account for tactile feedback somehow, and he's much easier to write if he can feel. Having no mouth or real nose, he has no sense of smell or taste, but I do consider his ability to read radio waves another type of sense.

What I also liked about Metal Sonic's bionic hearing is very similar to my own, he hears things that Sonic doesn't yet hear til much later, he has a good input dynamic range (IDR for short) which is also something I also have with my cochlear implants.  The higher and wider that range is the more sound that's farthest will reach you first before the others will hear it.  For example, when I'm in the car with my mom.  I can hear a siren of a police car, ambulance or fire truck minutes and miles before she can hear it.  So I'd let her know that there's an incoming emergency and the first time I told her this she didn't know what I meant until she finally heard the sirens minutes later.  Now she knows what I mean when I say that but it was totally new for her to experience this.  Metal Sonic also seems to have a good input in how sensitive he wants his own hearing to be.  Something I also have control over.  If I turn down the sensitivity of my sound processors I can make the sounds of the fan or air conditioner become almost non-existent or completely gone by how much it's turned down allowing me to block their annoyance completely.

I also liked how Metal Sonic helped Sonic get a bionic leg.  I never thought I'd see the machine be used that way until he said how he could modify it.  I have learned alot from this story and I like it alot!

As for giving him a sense of emotion, I don't think that was a bad thing at all.  It is hard to write something without a hint of emotion.  After all he has a flicky and that in itself has emotion and it's probably where it stems from so it helps in alot of ways.  Plus Metal Sonic has some sensors that help him "sense" what's Sonic's current condition and takes it from there.  I'm excited to see how all this unfolds!

TheEnigmaMachine In reply to Moon41083 [2016-09-22 13:58:58 +0000 UTC]

Huh, that's actually really cool that your implants give you all those abilities! And it's great to hear I was able to mimic that with how Metal hears too. I do try and get inside the character's heads when I write the story, so it's always great when I manage to convey how it would really feel to experience the world like Metal.

And I have to confess, I am jealous that you can turn down the sensitivity of your sound processor. I work in this awful "open concept" office, and the noise levels there get intolerable. Sometimes not even my head phones are enough. xD

I'm also glad to hear you liked how Sonic got his bionic leg! I know the Sonic series has a couple of characters who end up as cyborgs, like Bunnie, but I wanted to make the process as scientifically accurate as possible. The way the brain controls the limbs is fascinating, and tying mechanical prosthetics to the nervous system is something science is currently not very good at. So I wanted to develop a full range of consequences from giving Sonic his new leg.

As for Metal's feelings -- I believe one of the main purposes of fiction is to deliver a series of emotions to the reader. After all, that's why people read fiction -- they want to feel what the character feels. So it was important to make sure Metal conveyed emotion for the reader. Actually, before I started to publish Iron Oxide, I wrote a very rough draft of the whole story, and Metal was a lot more robotic in that draft. But it made the whole story so boring that I had to give him more emotions.

Moon41083 In reply to TheEnigmaMachine [2016-09-23 00:37:39 +0000 UTC]

Hey there,

For those with regular hearing, the brain is the main source of that sensitivity.  Sometimes my processors can't tune down a certain sound by much so what happens then?  My brain tunes it down.  When I was born I didn't know such a thing as sensitivity or "tuning out sounds" because I only grew up with on ear hearing everything, while the other was deaf from birth and no one knows why.  I got my implants later in life when I became late deafened in my one good ear and the process to get them wasn't easy.

In my teens it was more risky because they said that if they touched the deaf ear then I would lose my good ear.  At that time I knew it was a lie.  As an adult, I found that I was right about the lie as my ears weren't exactly linked with eachother due to what the CT Scans and MRI scans both showed.  Both sides showed that they had all their parts intact so the question that they pondered with was why was I deaf in one ear and hearing out the other.  I also had tests that were HARD especially the sentences test, with and without noise it was so hard, my audiologist knew that I could understand fast paced speech but the sound booth proved otherwise that I lost way too much of my hearing to even understand just what the recordings said.  It was tiring and frustrating.

On June 18, 2012 I had the surgery.  I had opted months ago that I wanted to get both ears done at the same time and when surgery came I was explained about what was going to happen.  I had to have a sign language interpreter present to understand cause my world of sound with my hearing aid in my one good ear at that point was really fading and it was starting to hit me hard that the last of it was really just exhausted.

Activating the implants happened 1 month after the surgery.  I must say activation was really interesting.  I didn't hear speech or normal sounds.  What I heard was alot of beeping.  The only thing that made sense was electronic sounds like a car's turn signal.  The next day I went back to get the processor's reprogrammed for my implants and had it's software updated, it was then I heard speech but it sounded very washed out and alittle staticky as well as mixed with beeps.  But I had speech which was the main thing!    As time went on, the beeps faded in 2 weeks for the right ear and an additional 2 for my left ear.  We were all very happy that my right ear bounced back really fast because that's the ear I heard with all my life.  My left ear continues to be a work in progress. I also understood music in the beginning too even though it sounded very crappy, I could dance to it knowing that it's music and that it was only going to get better!  It did get better!

It's now 4 years since that time and everything I hear has normalized and music sounds more amazing than what it did growing up with one ear, I never knew that I could hear certain things that I wasn't hearing before was even possible.  My left helps balance that sound and fills in those missing voids that I had with just one ear.

I'm glad that Metal has feelings.  I was playing Sonic Adventure DX lastnight on my PS3 and did Gamma's Story.  His story made me imagine if that's what Metal might sound like if it were to be in a new game featuring him or a new anime, or if Metal would sound like Omega from Sonic Heroes.  His story made me sad as it's about him setting himself free from Eggman and destroying his brothers to free them from Eggman after Eggman had sent them on their way because they all found the wrong frog and he had emotions cause he had a Flicky inside him as well so it really made me think about your fanfic more.  I often wondered at that point at the last bit of Gamma's story about what he would decide to do, would he stay with Eggman or would he just let him go and would Sonic's friends accept him to be part of the group?

I could imagine what that rough draft of the story would be like.  Now I'm thinking if he was made to be more colder than what he is now in the current story.  I would still read it either way cause it's always good to have a view on different perspectives.

TheEnigmaMachine In reply to Moon41083 [2016-09-24 02:09:38 +0000 UTC]

Huh, that whole process sounds absolutely fascinating from a computer science and neurological standpoint! Your brain must have adapted to the implant's input overtime, which explains why sounds became clearer to you. It's pretty amazing -- not only do our senses require the physical organ (such as the ear), but they also require our brains to process the input in a way that makes sense. It's also amazing that the software update made the implant work better. I have to wonder what kind of code that would run! I am a computer scientists by training, and I actually got my M.S. in bioinformatics, so this type of application sounds just like a great application of bioinformatics.

I remember Gamma's story from Adventure too! It always made me so sad. I understand why they wrote it the way they did, because his death completed his character arc in a powerful way. It was always interesting the way they wrote it because Gamma seemed to have a different intelligence than the Flicky inside him, yet he still considered it better to free the Flickies inside himself and his brothers than to preserve the machine intelligence they all had. It's one reason I wanted to include the Flicky in Metal because it's an interesting ethical dilemma to consider. I've also always wondered -- does Omega have a Flicky inside of him?

I have to say, the rough draft of the story read more like non-fiction it was that boring. I usually alternate viewpoints every chapter, so some chapters have Metal's POV and some have Sonic's POV. What I found is that Sonic was a way more interesting character than Metal, so I had to revise somethings. I still sometimes thing the fic makes Sonic more interesting than Metal even now, but I hope I've smoothed it out and made them both likable characters.

Moon41083 In reply to TheEnigmaMachine [2016-09-24 03:34:10 +0000 UTC]

The sound strategy that I was activated with was called HiResolution (HiRes for short) and that sound strategy was pretty basic in itself.  It was much MUCH softer than what I was updated with the next day which was HiRes Fidelity 120 which allowed not only more sound but more accuracy in the current steering of the electrodes.  I have 16 electrodes in each ear, which means only 16 channels but with F120 I'm able to have more than 120 pitches with accuracy and at it's full potential.  I also got updated again 2 years ago with a sound strategy that helps to optimize the battery. That update was only supposed to improve the battery life but some reports from different users including myself notice even more pitch perception and more detailed in sounds that were already heard once with the F120, the sound strategy I use now is called HiRes Optima.

Interesting story behind this.  When I was first activated I was activated with HiRes S (S stands for sequential) so the electrodes fires sequentially.  I tried the P strategy (P stands for Paired) where the electrodes fires in pairs, I couldn't handle it at first as that one is more louder but had a better sound quality.  As time went on, my nerves became stronger and I requested to try the P strategy again and lo and behold I was able to.  1 year after the 6th month appointment I was put back on S due to upgrading to Optima so it was pretty loud to say the least until my brain adapted to it.  I'm now back on P and I must say I love P more than S for alot of reasons.  S causes my tinnitus to flare up at times, so when it flares I can't wear my processors for a few days, and when I try to while having a flare up, I can't hear at all.  So I just wait for it to die out and then recover my energy from that as the flare takes alot out of me including temporarily disturbing my balance.  I never got this with P and is why I prefer it more over the other.  Both strategies sound good in their own way and they do sound alittle different.  The majority of the users of my implant type prefer S due to how it sounds but there are some P users out there.

Soon I'm due for another update on my processors, this time it's to help them change programs faster, currently it takes 3 to 10 seconds to change programs depending on that program, not all of them take long.  The company who makes my implant is called Advanced Bionics and they have made it so that they can allow the processor to change programs faster.  I can also opt to try new things to add onto my programs but I don't really need stuff added other than getting the processors to change programs faster as well as some tweaks to the electrodes, much like how Eggman tweaks Metal for his needs to neutralize Sonic.

Speaking of Omega, there's a chance he has a Flicky or some other animal inside him.  We'll never know unless someone destroys him or operates on him to tweak something.  I'm very curious about that since he looks pretty much like Gamma so I'll say he has a Flicky inside of him.  Yet, Omega is a more serious version of Gamma in his own way.  Gamma was more laid back and caring.

That is interesting about the draft of the fiction.  Did Metal seem more evil in the draft or was it that he made scientific details more boring?  He sounds really fun explaining everything in the fic.  The more I go back and read it the more things that I can imagine of what it's like in each chapter.  I'm curious do you have a picture of what Sonic's bionic leg fully looks like?  I could only see a small part of it in a comic you made for one of the chapters about where Metal felt that no one cared about him or would even miss him and Sonic said that he would miss him.
