Description

A ranger traverses the largely life-sparse Valleys of Telsarane in desperate pursuit of their quarry; a Cursed Dragon. The winged beast had been sighted recently flying south, high above the many fishing villages that runs along the northern coast of Pent before swooping over to the western lands of the Telsarane Valleys. Even though the Dragon had not attacked any of the villages it was still deemed a significant threat to all. It needs to be hunted down. To be expunged as quickly as possible. The Realm cannot risk another outbreak of The Cursed. One simple wound from their many poison-tipped barbs is enough to begin The Corruption and there’s no stopping it! Once The Corruption begins it’s only a matter of time before the victim’s mental state turns to insanity and their physical appearance becomes distorted. A grotesque and bloody mess of flesh, bone, and Corruption.

These lands of Telsarane were once incredibly fertile. Forests were thick and healthy, teaming with flora and fauna of all varieties. The city of Pornst, as Academics will tell you, was once the proud monument of Academic achievements that our Realm had ever seen. From Pornst the Western regions had been ruled by its once proud Senate for centuries, governing all levels of life and tradition through both prosperities and wars. That was, until, the The Cursed Blight was to strike at the very heart of the vast capital city. From texts recovered and maintained by Academics, the City of Pornst had lasted mere days before falling into total ruin. The texts paint a veritable picture of blood and destruction. Once The Cursed Blight had begun, it was all but too late to stop it. Despite the substantial range of texts in the Great Academic Library, it is unclear, exactly, how The Cursed Blight began its efforts to overthrow the once great city. The only establishment was that of the first known location of its first known sighting; the senate itself. One of the Senators, a not-so-popular one at that, was orating a lengthy speech when it was reported that he began to convulse and scream before his body exploded in a hail of gore and barbs. Barbs that carried The Curse. Dozens of senators and their guards and their servants became Corrupted within a matter of a heartbeat and from their The Cursed erupted throughout the city. When The Cursed Blight of 139 GotroTunas (GT) spread through Telsarane like wildfire, entire swathes of lands were made almost sterile. Nothing can grow save for grasses and, at most, flowers. The reasons for the limited range of flora and the complete lack of fauna are unknown and most Expeditionists and Academics believe the land to still be troubled by The Cursed. Parties from both groups have attempted to explore the millennia’s ancient ruins of Pornst but many of which have never returned. One survivor of an ill-fated Expeditionists troupe reported that a ‘swarm’ of The Cursed had erupted from the ground below their camp and Corrupted everyone within mere heartbeats. This, he told, shortly before being given Mercy at the hands of her fellow Expeditionists, for she, too, had been Corrupted. ‘Mercy’ is the only way to end The Corruption. Mercy by Fire. Intense and prolonged. Until all that remains are nothing more but fine ash.

A ranger makes her way passed the outer edge of the defiled ruins of Porsnt, stopping by one of the old Celestial Towers to the city’s south. This tower is one of the capital’s many observatories that had once mapped and chartered the heavens over a period of millennia. This particular tower was the first to map the heavens correctly and predict their patterns for 1000 years. The results of such work were shared with other astrologers who helped make great advances in areas of religious enlightenment and celestial navigation. The creation of the Astrolabe was one such advancement from this pivotal research and many travellers have often been saved from being lost by the most basic of knowledge of its usage. Over the countless ages since the city of Pornst had first lain in ruin, the Celestial Towers soon followed. No Astronomer has set foot amongst these towers as none are willing to make the treacherous journey for what little scraps of research might remain after being exposed to The Winds of Time for so many centuries. Today, only the base columns, the foundations they stand upon, are all that remains, but barely. The staircase that once followed the inner circumference reduced to nothing more than a single cracked step. The ranger marvels at the remains of eroded details carved into the tower’s walls and columns. The lone tracker knows not to tarry too long on one spot. Not here. Too many of The Cursed inhabit this region of Telsarane. Besides, there is a far more important matter of concern for the lonesome individual to attend to. The ranger covers their eyes with the flat of their hand from the suns powerful light, hanging in the air against a backdrop of brilliant blue skies and fluffs of pure white clouds. The Cursed Dragon is far ahead but signs of its lunacidal rage is evident on the odd occasion. In the distance a smattering of blood and mucus can be seen. Either the Cursed Dragon had dropped a rare meal from a great height or its slow-progressing Corruption forced it to spill its guts from the same great height. Either case didn’t really matter. What’s important is that it left a nice trail to follow and, chances are, there will be plenty more to follow over the course of the next few days, weeks, perhaps even months.

The ranger catches of whiff on the air, but not from the direction of the bloodied remains ahead. The smell is closer. Fresh but somehow still putrid. The smell is both familiar and unnerving all at once. It’s time to move on, now. The ranger takes a final quick look at the ruins and lets out a single sigh.
