This could have been shot better, sure. More light, simpler background, and maybe zoomed out a bit would have helped a lot. I'd say invest in a cheap tripod, you can find them at Target, if you have one close by. I'm sure the D3000 has a timer, and you can prefocus on a chair, start it, move the chair out and pose. I'd still love to work with you in the future, I know we could get some great shots.
