i feel bad for this guy meta wise. As much as he gets shit on thanks to GW and MATT WARD, this guy earned his status among the Primarchs.

Yeah, he was very capable and more emotionally mature than most of his brothers.
He knew that the Emperor's teachings were mor important than the man himself, like Malcador kept preaching about. And his Codex Astartes is still an invaluable source of strategems. And he was the first to point out that it wasn't perfect. He said so himself: "[My teachings] are yet flawed. No one, not even one such as I, can anticipate every possible outcome of battle. My words are not some holy writ that must be obeyed. There must always be room for personal initiative on the battlefield. You and I both know how one spark of heroism can turn the tide of battle. I have an irrational loathing for the Ultramarines. I think it's because GW keeps lavishing so much praise and attention on such a bland Chapter. Where are the frickin' SALAMANDER Codex and special units?
Okay, maybe that's selfish. You know who's often played, but has minimal rules differentiation? Chaos Marines. Unless things have really changed on that front since I played, Legions are largely identified in rule terms by units unique to their Chaos allegiance.
