Description My first Oyster Mushroom grown ever. Grew it on my mushroom logs out back. Ten minutes later, this little tasty was digesting in my tummy, first having been fried in a little fresh butter, seasoned with a little salt and pepper.

I love mushrooms too. I have two kinds growing at my place - Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms. So far, only the Oyster logs have started producing. I expect them to produce many times over the summer and autumn. Thanks for the +fav!

I do indeed. Oysters and Shiitakes so far. Thinking of adding Enokitakes and Lion's Mane mushrooms next. Delicious!

Oh.. okay. Did you cultivate it yourself, or just find it growing and harvest it? ^^ And what does it taste like? o.o

I cultivated it myself... inoculated the logs in May of last year, and have been watching them ever since. I see that on one of them there is a huge swelling of mushroom spawn coming, so I think this means I will quite suddenly be inundated with mushrooms. Which is great, cos Oyster mushrooms are much, much better tasting than your standard supermarket button mushroom. They taste like a mushroom... hard to describe, really. They are extremely good just fried in a little butter, and also extremely good made into an omelet.

o.O How do you "inoculate" a log with mushrooms? *salivates* Mmm.. mushroom omelette... :3~~

easy... I bought two mushroom spawn kits by mail order. Then for the Shiitake logs, I drilled holes into the logs and pounded in 250 of these little dowel plugs that were already colonised by the mushroom spawn. Then I covered the holes with beeswax to seal it all in and threw the logs onto the ground.

For the Oyster spawn, it arrived as a bag of straw and grains that had been colonised as well. Then I wrapped the ends of those logs with a bundle of straw/grains, held in with a piece of aluminum foil and a rubber band. Left them in a plastic bag for about a month so the spawn could latch onto the logs and then buried them halfway down in a hole, one end of the logs sticking out.

Then I forgot about them for a while.

O.O I didn't know you could buy mushroom "seeds". That's utterly groovy. Especially the "forget about them for a while" bit.
