Description While in the air headed for Louisville I saw this cloud booming lightning. I had numerous shots on the ground before take-off but shot this one and thought nothing of it. I looked at it again and something about the colors amazes me. The quality isn't stellar but I really like the way that the clouds came out and it almost apears like a sunset time of day even though it was completely dark. I also like the fact that the lightning is present but not the entire focus of the shot. Tell me what you think. Oh and more lightning shots to come.

The lightning looks like it's being controlled for once, how it goes sideways. Something to think about, even the lightning can be controlled by God.

Beautiful capture. Very lucky indeed to be able to capture such a sight. It’s strange how something so dangerous can be so very wonderful at the same time. The colours are fantastic and the detail is spot on. Quite a coincidence to come across this photograph actually as we have just had a fairly stormy day here in Scarborough, England. Nowhere near as spectacular as this though. Keep up the excellent work here.

PS: I would add this to my favourites but I have just added another person’s work. Sorry. I'll return in a couple of days to add this one. I won't forget.

thank you for the kind words. I have gotten in the habit of trying to take a camera with me everywhere i go. Doesnt mean lightning is everywhere but always means the things i see can be seen by all if i can get even an ugly shot.

Fantastic dude, really stood out at me on my devwatch (through OWP) and kind of made me glad to put up with all the silly submissions. This is absolutely great, partially because it was done with an automatic camera and therefore and exposure that's probably > 1 sec (?).

Great work, dude.

theoman In reply to AmateurWeevil [2004-08-22 23:27:14 +0000 UTC]

actually the minolta dimage z1 is an either auto or manual camera. I have never used anything but the manual section. it is actually a lot like a rebel g in its works it was all the different shooting modes. I compare it to a dslr by saying its as close as you can get and not be an interchangeable lense system. Thank you for your kind words i am glad to here that i took you out of the normal stuff that one word often has.

AmateurWeevil In reply to theoman [2004-08-23 07:23:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh sorry man, I misread an earlier comment in which someone was talking about how they had to change the exposure by leaving a hand over the shutter to 'fool' the automatic camera into using a slower shutter speed. Either way, fantastic shot - it's not the easiest thing to take a photo from an aeroplane window!

tis true and understood. I found that the hardest thng was keeping the reflection of my lens out of the window.

Amotion [2004-08-22 15:19:03 +0000 UTC]

amazing shot! how do capture lightning? do you just keep pressing the shutter button repeatedly and just hope?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

theoman In reply to Amotion [2004-08-22 17:31:08 +0000 UTC]

you could do that if there was a ton of strikes but the general technique is to leave your shutter open longer and hope it doesnt get washed out with too much light. I feel a lot of this shot was luck but that still counts.

Amotion In reply to theoman [2004-08-22 18:09:43 +0000 UTC]

cool, i only have a sony cybershot so i can't manually change shutter speeds, it does it automatically the only way i can change it is by holiding my hand over the lens to block the light before i take the shot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

theoman In reply to Amotion [2004-08-22 23:28:14 +0000 UTC]

it doesnt have like a night shot or other adjustment mode?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amotion In reply to theoman [2004-08-23 08:30:28 +0000 UTC]

it has a night shot mode but i still can't control the shutter speed manually, it does automatically- its really an amateur camera ('cos i'm an amateur ) so it's just designed to point and click.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

theoman In reply to Amotion [2004-08-23 16:14:56 +0000 UTC]

never sy your an amature again. Always look higher. Anyway the nightshot should have a longer esposure period than the normal mode. Unless it is a nightshot so you can see in the dark type thing.
