Description OK! i know its nothing amazingly special or anything.. but heres a new piece... soon to be followed by a few more (soon i promise!) but this is pantera. and PER REQUEST the whole thing is 52 inches. where 42 inches is blade. almost an inch for the guard and the rest is the handle. it is all wood and most of it is done with hand tools. im slowly leaning towards those
(personal note. i HATE PAINTING. omg. someone please paint them for me and i will hug/love you forever, the painting on this took 2 months because i kept messing it up )
but yea. i think this one turned out pretty nicely (aside from it feeling far too long for the short handle)
but oh well
i hope you all enjoy and as always please ask any questions you may have and critique it in any way you deem fit.

Hello, would you be willing to sell that sword? or could you possibly make a new one for me? Please? lol Its looks very nice and I would be useing it for cosplay. there is a convention coming up on july 17 09. thats the first day so if you could contact me about pricing or if you cant sell please let me know. This is very good, you really improved your wrapping.
If your paint stays gel like it means your putting on too heavy a coat. Is it spray or brush on? If spray use very light coats. It is better to spray a sword a whole bunch of times than try to do it in a few and amazingly it actually takes less time. You can finish paint a sword in less than a day. Most of your time will be spent waiting for the paint to dry. A light coat should feel dry in a few minutes, but wait at least 1/2 hour. If warm and fairly calm spray outside it dries faster and won't stink up the house.
Now make one that disassembles, you're ready.

scared. ok. i shall try soon.
uhm. the next few that come out arent goign to be like that tho. i have 2 blades ive made that werent initially supposed to be JUST blades. i messed up on sanding them both a LONG time ago, and instead of just throwing them away. i cut off the handle and im going to use the areas that i didnt sand very well into the handle lol
so they may be detatchable. but the sanding sucks and therefore the blade will look bad. i guess theyll be practice runs for the whole detaching thing...
and aside from those.. i have to finish 3 commissions that im working on Right now. plus my own cosplay sword for A-Kon on may 29th. *Nero's sword from devil may cry 4* that thing is going to look good.
but yes. with your blessing i shall try to emulate a true katana very soon.

The best thing for sanding and shaping is to get a belt sander and learn how to use it. It really cuts the time down. I can do a handle in about 5 minutes and a blade in ten. If you have a bench sander you can add to the list of what you can do. The ball on this [link] was made in about 15 minutes using a drill and a bench sander. Get the hand sander first because it's a lot less expensive and more practical.

i Hate using the belt sander. if it is at all possible i try to use anything but the belt sander lol
i also have the bench sander, but for a makeshift lathe, i recently used my drill press and my dremel. worked well ^_^
for heavy heavy sanding, i like using the orbital sander. i have a bit more control with it
but i thought you use the edge jig to make the edges for swords now? and what exactly are you doing on the handles? just rounding them?

fixinman In reply to ThePyromancer [2009-04-22 03:26:17 +0000 UTC]

The edge jig is for people who either don't have or aren't experienced with the sander. It's a toy you really have to be familiar with, but when you are you can do amazing things with
Here is what I use it for on handles. [link] All outside the line will be removed. It took 5 minutes to do the whole handle.

what kind of belt sander are you using? the one i have is not very efficient at doing precise things - it eats wood way too quickly to do perfect ellipses...
for handles i use a router - and its my best friend.

It took me a few years to get the feel of mine. My best tip is to use fine sandpaper to slow down the cut. Keep to above 80 grit.

o..m...g...i hate you and your skill xDDD

i really love this, it's AWESOMe, especially the binding, wow, is the blade a silver color? it's hard to tell in the lighting, it looks like it blends into the handguard

ThePyromancer In reply to WritingInTheSky [2009-04-11 01:19:09 +0000 UTC]

yea the blade is silver, in real life it looks correctly like metal... it was just an odd exposure i guess >.<
the other person thought it was white O.o
but yea. i also enjoyed doing that wrap. took me a little to find the right material. joanns fabric store ftw. wrap on a sword is really hard tho...

WritingInTheSky In reply to ThePyromancer [2009-04-11 01:32:18 +0000 UTC]

Joanns fabric is win, I go there for all my fabric needs (sounds like an infomercial)

JUGGLE MASTER!

and ya that binding looks hard, did you glue it together to keep in the same spot or is it just there?

ThePyromancer In reply to Nixity [2009-04-11 00:48:40 +0000 UTC]

are you meaning that i messed up the colors? or are you asking how i messed up such a simple paintjob?
cause i didnt mess up the colors
the blade is solid grey tho btw. to emulate steel.
as for the second part (how i could mess up something so simple) - uhm well... to start off... im not a painter hah
i make things from wood and use my hands... painting is odd.
but i dont normally have this much trouble with it. this time, it seemed every coat i put on the blade would just stay wet and jelly like... so when i tried to sand it down and make it smoother for a following coat... it would just gum up and look terrible! i couldnt get it right.. and then when i finally had some parts right.. id overspray with the spray paint and have to redo a different coat that was finished.. and then That part would gum up again.. and so on and so forth... this was the difficulty i had painting it... and it was quite angering.

Nixity In reply to ThePyromancer [2009-04-11 09:09:07 +0000 UTC]

I was wondering how you messed up the simple paintjob ^-^
In that sense I know what you mean. I'm an artist, not a heavy labouror so I would find that strange.
Oh mai o.O That sounds seriously annoying.
I think I wouldve given up after the third try x_x'

lol. i dont think he would have appreciated that tho >.>

No I dont think he wouldve. Either way, well done for sticking at it. No matter how simple or intricate, this sword looks awesome! I just wish I could commission you but
a. Im broke
2 I'm still broke
Thirdly, I dont have a cosplay in need of a sword x_x''

I know what you mean. I have a bokken and a kunai. I love them alot but Im so afraid of them getting broken. There is scratches all over the bokken from a play fight I had with a friend. I really regret it x_x

get a shinai <3
i have play fights with them all the time and they are much more play fight friendly. you can hit people with them without fear of cracking a skull and they cant look bad either since they arent the most beautiful things to begin with haha

the bokken I have has a sheathe so it only got beat up because I used the bokken and she used the sheathe - and she wasn't bothered about the paint job '^-^
