Thanks! Trust me, I felt that same mood when I took the photo, and I'm happy I was able to capture it.

Very nice picture. Love the difference between the car's interior and the tracks passing behind. So is this car attached to the back of an Amtrak train or something? *curious what train it was riding on*

This was a specially-chartered 6-car train running from Washington DC to Lynchburg, VA over to Roanoke, VA, where we picked up the charter group and did a round trip to Lynchburg and back to Roanoke, and then we returned to Washington DC. I shot this photo on the return trip after we passed Lynchburg again for the fourth time that day.

So what is the rest of the train like? Also "historic" cars? What kind of loco pulled it?

therudycometh In reply to Raakone [2012-01-29 23:43:19 +0000 UTC]

There were three more historic cars (the Morristown & Erie Railway's ex-CN dining car Birken, along with the Collins P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society's ex-PRR cafe/lounge Braddock Inn and NYC tavern/lounge #38), two normal Amtrak Amfleet coaches, and Amtrak P42 #52.

So did I! This car has track lights (which is why the track is lit up) that I used to illuminate the track in the middle of the night. Once I saw how it looked, I just had to get a photo.

very surreal...hard to imagine such a train today, with such an exit!..

therudycometh In reply to contemporaryhart [2012-01-29 18:05:29 +0000 UTC]

That's because the car is about 89 years old!

I suppose what I meant is I'm surprised you found one still in operation. What train is this? Where'd you catch it?

I said this below, but....

I rode it as a crew member from NYC to Roanoke and back. I know the owner of this car.

Interesting...sorry I didn't see that written below the photo. So, this experience is available only on a chartered basis, or knowing the people you do?..lol..

therudycometh In reply to contemporaryhart [2012-01-30 02:58:12 +0000 UTC]

Yup, charter only, as this car is privately owned. I actually worked as a crew member on this trip, so it was doubly awesome because I got paid!

that's very cool!...that's great that they still operate such gems too..

therudycometh In reply to contemporaryhart [2012-01-30 03:01:40 +0000 UTC]

Yup! It's pretty neat to have that experience. This one even has original 1920's Pullman bedding to sleep in - pretty cool to wake up doing ~70 mph in a 1923 passenger car under 1920's blankets.

Wow!...even the bedding is original!..that's wild! I'll definitely have to check this out some day.. Did you get any other shots of the art deco interior?

I probably have 100 shots of this car, as I've ridden it and worked on it quite a few times. None of the rest of them are particularly artistic though.

I'll be riding her again this summer at least twice, so I'll have more opportunities.

contemporaryhart In reply to therudycometh [2012-01-31 02:26:48 +0000 UTC]

Right on! It'd be cool to see some details of the interior decor. Although I know how limiting it can be in a small space. The shot you posted here is particularly revealing for the quality of the wood and the scale/height of those shelves, and the seating too. The old little clock, the moulding, and the b/w photo add to the 'reality' of that yesteryear. It couldn't have been better shot too with that door and the blurry well-lit tracks behind.
Maybe you can get a girl you know to dress up this summer in 20's garb and sit in the dining car or s/t...that'd make a great shot I'm sure..

I'm sure my girlfriend wouldn't mind modeling for me. I've been looking for a way to sucker her into this train thing - seeing as she's a photographer too, maybe that's a good entrance point.

Heh, nice juxtaposition with the picture at the top right! Is this some kind of special car?

therudycometh In reply to shenanigan87 [2012-01-28 18:57:20 +0000 UTC]

This is the Kitchi Gammi Club, a restored 1923 Pullman car, and the only car operating in the U.S. with its original open sleeping berths intact. These are the original berths that EVERY sleeping car in the U.S. had in the 1910's-1940's.
