I've been working on completing the final UV Mapping and textures for the new modified Kiev Class. I've gotten the Flight-Deck, Hull, Superstructure, and Hangar fully mapped and textured now... but still need to do roughly 3 more maps for details and smaller parts... Here's a top-view comparison of the new Kiev Class to my UNS Oriskany II for a sense of size. The Oriskany is 922ft from bow to stern and the new Kiev is 808ft (both measurements at the main Flight-Deck level).Related content

The layout of my Oriskany II is closer in lay-out to the Asuka than the Kiev, my Kiev Class is essentially just an updated Soviet Cold-War Kiev Aviation Cruiser. The Asuka and My Oriskany II would both be Fleet "Super-Carriers" and the Kiev only has space for about half the aircraft that a full carrier can field...

Only had room for the one... on the original Kiev Class it's mid-flight deck towards the stern (roughly where I've added the blast deflectors for the catapults) which reduces hangar space for parking aircraft, my modernization shifted it to the starboard side deck-edge to maximize available hangar space... I based this redesign on similar modernization's to the Essex's where the elevators mid-line were shifted to the deck edges when the angled flight decks were added (I felt it suitable that the Russians would copy this idea in a modernization update as they often copied US patterns and designs)... She's about 90ft shorter than the original Kiev Class, but I extended the hangar space below decks and freed up valuable space by shifting the elevator to the deck-edge which also has the advantage of creating more parking space above decks when the elevator isn't in use...

Yeah I am running into same thing. Figuring out the placements. Was debating behind superstructure and the stern. Already figured out cat placements. When I was checking scale the humor was the ski jump ended up longer than what was needed for a cat. Why I was debating rescaling her.

Fore and aft of the superstructure on the deck-edge are typical elevator placements, opposite the angle deck from what I've seen in most modernization refits... Those ski-jumps are shorter than you'd think... relatively short and with an angle of about 10-15 degrees if I recall correctly...

12 degrees is the norm .Β She just worked out they way when I used another ship for reference.Β Although a longer ski jump would allow for a larger payload.Β Β

Theoretically yes, but the length has to be balanced with the take-off run needed to get up to launch speed before entering the ramp angle... Sounds like you have the build well in hand though...

Well comics used a very dark blue for black butΒ I just preferred the charcoal gray so people wouldn't think it was midnight blue lol.

So far so good... finished basic figure rigging and started ERC coding yesterday... gotta finish up the ERC's and then do thumbnails and final product tests/file clean-up and she'll be done... Probably have her released either this week-end or early next week...

I can imagine... my laptop was a real trooper... the lousy old desktop of mine crashes if I even think of trying to load the scene files that I had the lappy working on... ram limit crash-outs are so much fun. The desktop is so old and low mem that I had to render the scene of the Kiev with her aircraft in stages... if I added more than 4 aircraft on her deck in the scene I'd hit the ram limit and the render would crash...

Well problem is new laptops aren't designed to last that long and running Daz Iray without the RAM or the Nvidia video card puts a lot of pressure on it.Β But I reallyΒ need the shadows for this one to work.Β

Got almost 6 years outta mine and it would a lasted longer if that power surge hadn't taken out the motherboard... and you've seen the kinds of renders I've been doing lately... it was definitely a workhorse and went way above and beyond what any laptop should have been doing, which is why I'm willing to spend the 200$ it's gonna cost me to get it fixed... Far as I'm concerned it's a damned good machine and worth keeping running...

Well 2 so far but not sure it's handling the externals hooked up to it. Why debating a desktop since I haven't used one in years and rarely go out with my laptop anymore. Otherwords I think I putting too much stress on the system

It's possible... I don't use IRay, can't afford the cost of the system and video card to support it properly (DAZ has kinda gotten like Microsoft... ask not what DS can do for you but what you can buy for DS) so I've stayed with 3DL which isn't nearly as resource intensive. Frankly 3DL is a high end rendering engine of its own, and I don't really understand why DAZ has never fully implemented it... it is a PBR capable engine and always was, but DAZ never implemented the full range of capabilities. I have to wonder what kind of kick-back they're getting from NVidia for using the IRay system and requiring users to buy NVidia hardware to support it...

Problem is I started having serious issues with 3Dl with 4.10Β unfortunately.Β But I think this more that I am running 5 TB of harddrive on a one TB laptop lol.Β

Last version of DS I got was 4.9... closed my DAZ account shortly after that... but I've been hearing mutterings that 4.10 is craptacular in a variety of ways if you don't have the latest NVidia card or hardware to support it...

tended to agree with 3DL going tits up on me after the update to 4.10.Β Honestly Iray isn't giving me the problems it is everything not iray related starting to get wonky.Β

Typical of DAZ... I'd take that as a sign that they'll be dropping 3DL at some point sooner than later... same sort of thing happened with the figure set-up tools right before they switched to the new figure formats... works fine to create a new weight-mapped figure, but the "legacy" (poser style) figure set-up is glitchy as heck (which is why I'm still using my old version of DS 2.3 for figure set-up). The tools crash regularly using legacy rigging, half the time it doesn't save certain rigs properly, and it won't keep a figure geometry intact if it references more than one mesh... it references the first mesh in the bunch and ignores any others assigned to the cr2 when you go into the skeleton/rigging tools... I constantly have to do the work of adding morphs etc in DS 4.7 and then reload the item in 2.3 and re-assign the missing obj references that it dropped to put things back where they belong. Didn't start doing that till DS 4+ and it only does it with what DAZ has called "legacy" rigging...
I've noticed a pattern with DAZ... when they plan on dropping a feature, or switching to a new format, things that used to work become buggy and glitch prone, then the feature gets dropped, hidden, or burried... I suspect they deliberately insert bugs so that people will get tired of issues and will stop using it so that DAZ then has justification to make what-ever changes they'd been planning... They can use the "glitches" to explain why that feature or tool set isn't supported any more. Build in a glitch, then use the glitch as proof that the feature needed to be changed...

Well I can still get 3DL to work with scripted using line renderer 9000. Glad I bought when it came out. Only thing is too much is coming out Iray only.

Well yeah, but that brings us back to the question of how much DAZ is getting back from NVidia as kick-backs for requiring the hardware to suport the rendering engine. They wouldn't be putting so much effort into promoting IRay if they weren't making something on it other than just product sales...
