Description
Okay, this cake marks my first attempt at using fondant. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out.The frogs and butterflies were made from gum paste, the flowers with buttercream, and the border with royal icing. The only non-edible part of the cake were the wires used to support the butterflies.

Your first cake? Men, you're a pro! You said, "...Since this cake was to celebrate April birthdays I wanted to go for a Spring look." Waaah!! What a coincident! My birthday is on April. I wish someone could make a cake like this for me *sob* T.T

Actually, for this cake I used fondant and not regular icing to cover the cake. Which is why it looks so smooth! Have you tried using fondant before?

no I have not, but I have been looking into it.
its abit expensive but its for an art project.
is it hard to work with?
and how do you get the corners?

This cake is the first cake I used fondant with, and it came out well, so I'd say it's pretty easy to work with. I found a recipe for a marshmallow base fondant, but I haven't used it yet. Its here if you're interested: [link] As for the corners, you just have to play around with it and see what works best. You're welcome!

I love this one! XD
Awsome job! I was wondering though, how did you make the icing so smooth? I kept wondering how I can make cakes like that. Guess I need more equipments in making one like this.
You're an artist of sweets!

The cake is covered with fondant, it's a substance that you roll out and then drape over an iced cake, giving it a really smooth finish. You can also use it to sculpt figures and such too! I just started playing around with it, and that was my first cake I made using it! It's a lot of fun to use!

Ah, I see. This is so interesting. Fondant right? Where can I find it? In grocery stores or art stores?
Cause that's so cool how it made the cake look smooth. What I have the Betty Crocker's Bake'n Fill pans. They work though, but hard work in making the cake. The first time I did it was awful,...which is posted here. Second time, my mom helped me. And it turned out better than the first, not to mention very good.
^^
Awsome you, you're very creative.

You can get fondant at a JoAnn Fabrics or an AC Moore.. or any other all in one craft store that has cake decorating supplies. JoAnn Fabrics also offers lessons in how to work with it... I wanted to sign up for a class... but never did, but I'm thinking I still might! There are a lot of cool books out there that deal with how to decorate using fondant too! Also, Food Network airs a lot of cake competitions that are very entertaining to watch! (My boyfriend groans everytime one is on, I can't stop watching!!!)

Its almost too cute to eat, but I think I'd find a way. What does fondant taste like? Seems weird...

theshaggyturtle In reply to CypressElf [2006-05-26 05:06:59 +0000 UTC]
Well... fondant IS kind of weird... it has a weird texture and the taste of it is kinda bland, but the frosting you use under it balances it out okay.
Thanks!!
