Haha it is not a Zoid, but I won't bet that Styx's designer wasn't influenced by them! xP

Very cool work. Love the sense of motion and the feel of 'machine power' behind it all. The shadow could use some work, but it doesn't ruin the feel as it is either.

No problem at all. I'm glad you decided to consider it!
So many artists get testy when you try and suggest a few improvements, so I'm glad there are some like me who appreciate constructive suggestions. Only that way you can learn.
It was a great piece before, now it's excellent!

Very nice. Could use some shadows underneath/in the direction light would flow.

Thank you You mean on the floor? The shadow is there, it's not too strong though, it was automatically created by the HDRI!

Maybe the shadow should be darker?

Silverlion In reply to TheSphinx [2012-01-18 00:25:38 +0000 UTC]
Maybe a little. Plus the thing is moving so fast, I'm not sure how the shadow should "move" or stretch.

TheSphinx In reply to Silverlion [2012-01-18 00:37:05 +0000 UTC]
Hmm yeah.. The shadow was stretched (with the motion blur) just like the rest of the scenery, it seemed to me like the correct thing to do!

overseer In reply to TheSphinx [2012-01-19 01:02:37 +0000 UTC]
Make it darker, maybe use Photoshop to create a flat copy of the mesh (mark the entire mesh, then fill it with black on a new layer), use the perspective tool to flatten it onto the surface, apply a motion blure and then play with the layer opacity and see what that does.

Yeah, I can see now that the IBL in Maya doesn't make a good work on casting shadows! I have tried what you said, please take a look at the image [here] and tell me what you think!

overseer In reply to TheSphinx [2012-01-19 06:19:10 +0000 UTC]
That's great. Maybe a tiny bit more motion blur to it and it'll be perfect!

Don't mention it. Thank you for considering it!
I have a slight advantage though. My wife is a traditional artist and does a lot of charcoal drawings. You gotta get lights and shadows right the first time if you do that, so she keeps pointing out when I get it wrong in my digital pieces allowing me time to correct it.

Haha yeah, I can see how that gets in your system xD I have made some drawings with charcoal too, so I have dealt with the pressure of not being able to commit many mistakes xP

Yep. But luckily a digital canvas doesn't get imprinted with lines quite that easily... unless you're prone to uncontrolled rage and think a hammer to a computer is a good idea....

Excellent model and render i've been lfollowing your project during the week. One major comment in this shot is the lack of motion blur on the model. The background looks like the cameras moving fast around the character rather than the character moving fast through the land. Could probably fake it quick in photoshop, but would definately give it a better sense of speed. cool stuff!!

Many thanks for your feedback, Matthew! I know what you mean, when I was compositing this image, I tried blurring the model aswell, but it just didn't feel right But I'll do some more experiments and if I achieve a better result, I'll upload it
Again, thank you very much!

What animal referance are you using for the pose? It looks kind of awkward. (For example for a horses run cycle when they are stretched out like that one hoof is on the ground. When all four are off the ground the legs are curled under the body).
[link]
For more mechanical lunging this would seem to still follow suit, more like a cat jump. Where they stretch up into it, or down. For such a low jump it is unlikely he the peak of the arc would be what is captured since it is a fraction of a second. Going up or Going down a little would make it 100x more believeable. Sadly cannot find a good google exploded view of this quickly
Just my $0.02.

TheSphinx In reply to Whispyyr [2012-01-16 20:38:54 +0000 UTC]
Styx is based on a cheetah, so the pose was based on how they run. Look for "cheetah running" on Google, you'll find some pictures proving that this image is not that weird. At least that's what I think! Thank you for your feedback

Whispyyr In reply to TheSphinx [2012-01-18 14:13:18 +0000 UTC]
Thats probably why it looks awkward then, its a "thicker" bodytype, compared to sleek cheetahs. Though it does make alot more sense now ^^
