Description
8-year-old Saka is a weak swimmer and as such, she can't last long in open water. Here, she is struggling and fearing for her life. Desperately thrashing and trying to swim to safety, she is crying out for someone to save her before she sinks underwater.Related content

You've done what you've set out to do but you only put in the bare minimum into the design, the execution, the perspective and you didn't even bother with foreshortening and a value study. Saka's facial expression, legs and right arm are all right, and those are the only three parts of her anatomy that are not wrong. I can understand why you got the left hand looking awkward (hands are by far the trickiest part of any anatomy) but WHAT HAPPENED TO HER NECK!? I'm sorry but a neck does not bend like that! In order for this to work Saka's back should be stretching up to the back and her shoulder should go down to make room. Looking down her body we see a whole new problem. Her belly should be sticking out from the body not inward and the opposite principals should be applied to her back. Her hair motion looks decent. Or at least it would if she was playing out in a field. Saka's supposed to be swimming towards the surface. A more convincing portrayal would have her hair curving outward to inward from the head, what you've got is inward to outward. Now that we're on the subject of the water, the water you've drawn here is not convincing at all. Yes, everything's a deeper shade of blue past the ripply white line by her ear and there's bubbles everywhere but bubbles water does not make. Try drawing splash lines around where she's reaching the surface that would show that she's breaching out and show the viewer's which parts of her body are still in the water and which parts have gotten out. To help you out with future drawings, might I suggest looking up photos of people underwater and coming out of water on flickr, google or iStock. Or if you want your next picture to be really accurate, search youtube for people swimming breaching and diving. That's all I have to say. I hope I haven't discouraged you from drawing or painting. In fact, I want you to get better at it. Keep pushing that envelope!

Oh that hehe ^_^, I just coloured it in and cleaned it up a little, I cannot take credit for doing the base work But i'm glad you liked it.
What I really like about your work is how it's more realistic in tone, it's believable, I don't really dig the whole adding weights to folks or getting tied up stuff which I see around a lot. What I really love from you is more real raw emotions like you've got in this picture and others you such as in "Swim, Shaya, Swim".
It's seriously hard-hitting stuff, I really respect it

Whether you did or not, it was on your profile and your user name got my attention and I thought because of that, maybe you'd be interested in seeing my work.
And it looks like you have, and that you've complimented my slightly different approaches instead of something that you say is more common. So I thank you for your comments.

I've been a fan of your work for a while, this is my second DA account. I still have the other, but that was more a watcher of UW stuff from afar, now I can be more anonymous truly here so I can engage more in following and buying commissions, writing stories and doing colours ect
I've always had a dark appreciation for a more desperate, panic, realistic and ultimately tragic approach to things, with more emotional weight behind it you can get 'into' the moment far better than say someone in a magic-escape tank.
I might just have to commission you to do another one of these someday ^-^

You strike me as fascinating. For you, I can certainly do commissions. So here:
2D Game Art CommissionsPlease read this entire journal when you have the time.
As of January 1, 2016, I have officially started "production" on game art and animation for Misla: Island of Legends (Misla Densetsu no Shima) and as such, I am devoting much of my free time to it. So from here on out, if any of you who have added some of my work to your favorites or even made comments, if you're interested in making requests or commissions, it will help if you select a character listed below. I've listed a bunch of characters from Misla and other random fan ideas here, so on the off-chance that you might be interested, let me know what you'd like to see next. You can pay me in either dA points or money via PayPal. I know the idea of commissioning me to do artwork of only my own originality may not sit well, but that's how I'm rolling at the moment. I'm an art school graduate and have student loans to pay monthly. This is also why most of my art is available as prints.
I am now on
This is mostly commissions for characters, but if you have something in mind within your interests, let me know and I may just either half-price it or do it for free.

I did actually read over it the other day, as well as the comment section, so I know that you prefer to draw entirely original characters or your own characters instead of licenced characters and I totally respect that.
But I would totally pay you in whatever method you'd prefer, Paypal would make most sense to me as I still am not entirely sure what people really use points for apart from maybe Core membership.
In terms of your characters from just a sheer look angle, I quite like Shaya and Saka. But then again maybe it would be better if I did come to you with an original character of my own if you'd prefer that.

For my brother, I'm willing to draw those Tactics Ogre characters that my latest poll mentioned.
I use points to maintain my CORE Membership, but if I get enough, I would also like give a month's worth to any friend. If you wanna pay me by PayPal, that's okay too, but we'd have to discuss terms in Notes because it would mean me giving you a link and I shouldn't do that publicly here on dA.
Whether I draw your OCs or mine, I'm fine either way. Regarding Saka, I take it you saw this one?

UWF-Fault In reply to TheThunder-Art [2018-01-22 23:40:18 +0000 UTC]
Oh of course final terms would be in-depth in notes ^_^, like I said i'm happy to use whichever method you'd rather.
Yeah I did see that one ^_^
Well if I come up with something, i'll send you a note with a pitch then based off if you like it or not you can propose the price.

Both work well with me, but I am raising a budget for my own video game with these Misla OCs.
Agreed.

Hello! Coming from
I'll be conducting this critique in sections such as-
Shading-
Line Art-
Anatomy-
Creativity-
&
What you're doing right
Let us begin
_________________
SHADING-
Well. There really isn't any. Which is somewhat of a problem. Everything is just plain, boring, blue. Because of the lack of shading the picture is just too intense and a bit jarring. Personally with these intense colors I think softer shading would really help out. I only see shading near the hair, which is almost unnoticeable and even worse: makes the picture inconsistent. Consistency in key is art. Improvement is of course fine and welcome but inconsistency is different.
she doesn't even look wet.
LINE ART-
The lines are also inconsistent, but thankfully they're not pixilated and they stay the same size which is fantastic, but you can tell the arm lines where straitened but the rest are quite shaky (Especially on the other arm), which ties into more inconsistency. Honestly I think it's fine when you have shaky lines, because with experience there's always a way to slowly rectify them. Never shy away from tutorials.
ANATOMY
Anime. For some reason all beginning human artists shoot for the anime style which I always warn people against. Anime isn't focused on creating realistic anatomy, they're focused on exaggerating it. But unlike people starting out with anime, the real artists know how to exaggerate traits tastefully (most of the time) and they are able to do this because they focused on REAL human anatomy first.
With this girl here, her only anime traits are the face and hair whereas the body just looks like it was drawn by someone who isn't an expert at it yet. Again: inconsistency.
The anatomy has some major issues. For one: her head, hands, and feet are gigantic making her look like a child and her arms have no creases or bends. (The lack of breasts also tie into the child look).

This Gals references will be sure to help you.
CREATIVITY-
In all honesty it's not that creative since it seems that many other people draw well... girls drowning. Side note: is it a fetish?
Anywho, there also isn't an interesting angle or anything to make the picture stand out in any way.
WHAT YOU'RE DOING RIGHT-
Obviously as I stated before your lines aren't half bad, the expression is clear, and her pose is actually quite descriptive of what's happening.
I hope you enjoyed my critique ^^~ also, I'm sorry I couldn't use the critique widget. My iPad glitches too much when I type on it

You had quite a lot to say, and for that much, you have my respect. But maybe... maybe I'm not just doing this to learn and improve... I am after all creating my own game with my own unique style and such. So maybe... I'm in this... for something larger than just getting comments. But you have my gratitude, make no mistake.

Hey, I'll write a critique for ProjectComment!
You did a good job at conveying her facial expression, she looks pretty upset. This makes me feel very uncomfortable, an emotion that is well expected when looking at picture of someone drowning...
I think there could be more splashing and movement conveyed though. Drowning people thrash around and flail for their lives before they go under (quite horrible ), but her body language just says she's just kind of waiting there. Splashes and small waves caused by her movement could be added to the surrounding showing that she is struggling. Her posture could also be more spread out with her other arm reaching above the water, a more natural things to do when drowning. Also, a lot of panic could be added to her face, drowning is apparently absolutely terrifying with survival instinct kicking in.
Some more shading would also really make the piece -pop- and give it some depth. I see some shading is there currently, but the piece could definitely do with some more. The water could also slightly gradient darker as it goes down due to less light. It would certainly make the scene look scarier and more realistic. Here's a shading tutorial if it helps at all: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkEZIj…
Hope this critique helped, good job

Possibly, but also maybe... for getting an audience emotionally invested... because my art is intending to tell a story.
