Description
I hate to draw buildings. ;3;
Yaaaaay finally it's done! After around a week, more than 140 layers, 232 megabytes, lots of musics to keep me alive and 4 cups of dark hot chocolate, the 1 of 5 art homework is finished.Β Β
All the art classes in my art school got a challenge to do something creative with a 30x30 cm format and grayscale, and this is my entry.
The original size of this thing was 3543x3543 and everything went slow after I finished shading Alex, and at some moment the storage in the comp's disc was too full to save the drawing, so I had to remove or save in somewhere else lotta of old works to add more 20GB to the storage and after I finally finished it yesterday my dad sent me to bed before I could submit it. Somebody from above really hates me I guess.
And as I said before, I hate buildings. So square and boring and unnatural. I hate them so much I kept them as sketches with pretty simple shading and used the same texture in their windows. And still, 60% from the total time of work I spent for the buildings (30% for Alex and 10% for the background and mist). I know they look terrible and crooked, but still I'm asking for critiques if you have any tips how to improve my work, because I believe it won't be the last time I'll draw cities.
Alex and artwork belong to me.
DO NOT USE THIS WORK OR YOU'LL BECOME A SQUARE AND BORING BUILDING!

omg this is amazing! The perspective is spot on, and eru was right about you not overdoing the clouds/mist/fog. The focus is really held by alex and his glowing markings

After getting to look from a very short distance at it it's pretty visible those buildings are not purrrfect, but they are absolutely good enough. And buildings are not your everyday routine, so yeah...
You've done a very, very good job on values in the picture - they are really important for greyscale. Those buildings you've included do have a pretty nice idea, too. They vary pretty nicely. Alex seems to be really well drawn, I don't have a lot to say here I guess. I like it.
I dunno what to critique here, it's a very good piece for me

it's just my first attempt to draw buildings so of course they're not purfect. ;3;
actually it was easier for me to use many values in the drawing since it has shades of only one color and I had to understand only the lightings.
the buildings are the title of the picture, they're not just an idea. o.o
the only thing I don't like in Alex is that I failed with his head and it looks a bit bigger, but oh welp, in ever pic I find something that is too small/big/long/short only after it's too late to fix
critique can be short or long it doesn't mind for me. just saying the good and bad points is count as a critique for me :3

WOOOOAAAAH This is an incredible artwork! It looks so epic and beautiful, I don't have enough words to describe what I feel about it. I love how Alex looks here, alone, staring at the sad and empy city, it gives me a great feeling. And drawing it in grey scale was a brilliant idea, I don't know why, but I think that this drawing wouldn't look as good as this if it was coloured. I found amazing how you did the translucid wings, they're gorgeous.Β
Very good job with the buildings and the fog, really, they look very good, I can see why they took so much time.

thank you!Β Β
yes, I'm agreeing with you that depressing scenes like this look much beautiful in grayscale, but if the task could allow me to add only one color, for the glowing markings, it could add even more to the drawing. oh welp

I merged some of the layers, but I don't like merging all because sometimes I needed to fix things or add things

Ok, so 140 layers? How did you keep track of everything?
Also, why are there no lights in the buildings? It gives me a bad feeling.
Also if you get bored of square buildings you could always add something like Turning Torso or that terrifying building outside my house that looks like Mecha Godzilla in the night. Or triangular buildings.
π: 0 β©: 1
TheWhiteShapeshifter In reply to Irinore [2015-11-15 16:32:08 +0000 UTC]
I stored those layers in many groups, inside few groups. I can count them all for ya~
about the lights in the buildings.... I was too lazy to add them
non-square buildings take longer to draw, that's the reason why I drew square and boring buildings. maybe next time if I'll get spare time and lots of motivation
π: 0 β©: 1
Irinore In reply to TheWhiteShapeshifter [2015-11-17 08:03:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, honestly I think it looks better without lights. It gives the feeling of blackout or post-apocalypse. Or "huge numb buildings".
