Our character design professor Ray Goto taught us this method so I thought it'd only be fair to pass it along. It makes life easier, doesn't it? LoL It was an eye opener. But again, this doesn't work with foreshortening, and in my opinion most poses are pretty stiff without foreshortening, however this'll definitely give you a step in the right direction! Thanks!

Please comment if you fave, so I know if this tutorial is usefull or not. I'm usually not a stickler about comment-fave ratio, except when it comes to my tuts. That way I know what to do for the next one! Thanks!

Wow, this is good info. I normally use myself in a mirror or try to find stock photos in the pose I want, but this is much easier. As a tutorial it's well laid-out and easy to follow too.

This tutorial was very helpful and I'm glad someone made one about arms, they're the hardest part of the body to draw, it seems.

I swear I had something similar in mind for when I did arms, but you've definitely explained it in a clear way. Clear and simple. Good job I think!

ZeroWhitefang In reply to ??? [2009-03-05 16:34:27 +0000 UTC]

i agree, very useful.

how would you go about this process if the hand was above the head?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThirdPotato In reply to ZeroWhitefang [2009-03-05 17:40:53 +0000 UTC]

Well it all has to do with knowing proportions of the body. The length of the upper arm is still the same length from shoulder to bottom of the rib cage. So you can draw a radial path from the lower ribcage all the way up to where it would meet above the head.

fullmetalelrik [2009-03-03 23:18:14 +0000 UTC]

duuuude you totally need to make a foreshortening tutorial, a lot of people have issues with that *cough* me..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThirdPotato In reply to fullmetalelrik [2009-03-04 13:45:21 +0000 UTC]

LoL Thanks! Foreshortening is covered in most general how to draw figures, life drawings, etc but if I have the time I can run one eventually.
