Description
Drawing a pistol in detail:Step 1: Go for your gun and un-clip the holster. If you got a hip holster under a shirt, lift up the shirt.
Step 2: After pulling out the gun, quickly rotate it so that it's pointed at your target. Can you start shooting at this point? Yes, if your target is pretty close.
Step 3: Bring your other hand to support the gun, while keeping it tight to your chest (in the case that some asshole tries to grab your gun) Can you start shooting here too? Yep.
Step 4: Extending your arms in a punching motion (known as 'punching out' your gun) Now you can aim properly.
Edit: chest holster added

I know that's it's basically been nearly a year since you made the comment.Β The kinda more detailed reason is because cavalry pistols were usually standins for carbines or were themselves capable of being converted into a carbine with the use of a specialized detachable stock, multi-purpose holster, or similar equipment.Β Often this meant barrels of 18+cm in length and total length of more than a foot for a pistol making it difficult to draw in a standard fashion without tilting your back and hip.
Examples of pistols that would require either a cross draw or cavalry draw.Β Β

The style of draw likewise matched some styles of sword draw when drawing a sword from the right side rather than the left.Β This was usually a difference controlled by the officer and only mattered during ceremonial duties.

1. Of course the revolver had a detachable stock to go with it; I've seen other revolvers with fixed/folding stocks before.
2. How good was that M1911 stock?
3. It's usual for the Luger to have a stock and a carbine version, but did you know there was a version of the Luger with a folding stock?:Β youtu.be/iWv5XysaPnU
4. I didn't know that select cap-fired pistols came with stocks!

M1911 with a stock was found to be too heavy for regular carry by officers.Β Even with dedicated fullautomatic and large magazine conversions they were found to be uncomfortable and lacked a good sight radius and general control of a dedicated smg or personal defense weapon.Β The idea was dropped the moment the us Carbine program opened it's proposals.Β The luger with the folding stock has a similar issue with the sights as the distance is too close for the shooter to focus on the front sight and allow the rear portion to faze out of the vision.

1. And the US considered replacing the M1911 overall with the M1 carbine.
2. It's not meant for long ranges, anyways.

I think I drew it awkwardly at the time. Here's more like how it should look:Β www.usconcealedcarry.com/wp-coβ¦
I believe it's called that because it's more convenient when you're sitting on horseback.

The gentleman in this YouTube video demonstrates the Cavalry Draw, and to be frank he makes it look quite easy and not very uncomfortable at all.

Yeah I drew it kinda awkwardly, didn't I.
But yeah, that is an interesting demonstration.

It took me a bit to realize that the cavalry draw was not, in fact, on his arse.

I think I drew the arm position too weird.
Then again, that draw is weird in general.

It would be a cool draw if it were on your arse. it would be all stealth-like

On the Red Example:
Weak-side hand should be tucked up around the chest or mid-torso area on number 1 to assist in creating that tucked in look on number 3. Unless you weren't going for a tactical look then ignore my comment.

Nice. Why did you include the cavalry draw? Although it would be cool if a motorcycle/horse pistol war broke out. Some chest/MOLLE holsters would've been cool too.

Well 'cause it's pretty damn unusual enough to be mentioned.
Chest holsters, shit. Forgot those even existed.

Would cavalry draw be really uncomfortable and possibly dangerous? It looks like the hand has to twist the palm-face away from the body.

PhiTuS In reply to Matsu-sensei [2011-02-05 19:22:53 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it does look uncomfortable and does look like you can accidentally shoot someplace undesirable (like...yourself for instance)
But hey, it's a real technique so I didn't make that shit up. I just listed it here as another possibility.

Oh, I think I'm viewing it a little oddly. The way the drawing is cropped off made me think the elbow isn't bended as much as it should to make a more comfortable movement.
