Description In 1910, Rallison Weaponry Limited was in a motive power crisis, as their No.1 'Percy' was overworked, as he had to run trains from the factory to the mainline connection, and then having to take materials back to the factory, along with shunting around the facility. Something had to be done. An order was placed to Hudswell Clarke for a revised design of their Hudswell Clarke 'T' design. He arrived later that year and was set right to work. He didn't have a name but was called No. 2. He remained unnamed until 1915, when he was purchased by the newly formed 'North Western Railway.' He was assigned to Knaphord as the station pilot and given the number '101'. When he was first set to work, he had a new crew. He decided to name himself after his old driver, Thomas G. Hudson.

He continued working at Knaphord until 1925, until he gave assistance to the failing 'Elsbridge Light Railway' which used to be the Tidmouth, Knapford, & Elsbridge Light Railway. The NWR finally was able to purchase the line from Elsbridge to Ffarqhuar. As Thomas already proved his worth on that line, and rescuing the new engine at the time, NWR #505 'James G. Jacobs' from a derailment, Thomas was given a promotion to branch line work, and was modified to be push pull fitted to run with two recently purchased coaches, Annie and Clarabel. To this day he can still be seen on this branchline, running up and down with his two coaches.

In 1948, the newly formed British Railway was looking for a way to brand their services and looked to the NWR for this. After an agreement between the NWR and BR, Thomas was painted into BR express blue and renumbered to 47101 to fit in with the Midland Regions numbering scheme. He kept this livery for a few months before being painted back into NWR blue. This was until 1960, when he was rebuilt after an accident with a station masters house, he was rebuilt with a flat running board, which increased his coal and water capacity. Not much changed after that, and he was repainted in 2010 to the new NWR Livery.
