Bucc fucking hates flying, but they gotta learn anyway, just in case.

“Okay, squirt,” Rainbow Dash pranced back and forth in front of her child, ruffling her wings and trying to look awesome, even though Bucc couldn’t appreciate the spectacle, “today, we’re gonna focus on getting you up to that cloud there!” She pointed dramatically, then facehoofed at her own actions and turned to angle Bucc’s face in the direction of said cloud. “Iiiiiiit’s about 100 metres that way.”

Bucc was sceptical.

“I dunno, mom,” they said, “that’s pretty far away.”

“Heh, no it isn’t!” Rainbow protested. “It’s easy! Watch! Uh, I mean, oh ponyfeathers, just trust me on this, okay? I’ll be right alongside you the whole time.” She smiled and bumped shoulders with the younger pegasus. “You’ll be fine. Promise.”

“I guess,” Bucc sighed. “Let’s get this over with then.”

“That’s the spirit!”

Rainbow bumped shoulders with her child again then jumped up into the sky and did a few loops. She looked down to find Bucc still on the ground, but that’s wasn’t anything unusual; Bucc always took a while to actually get into the air. Whilst she waited for them, Rainbow did a few more flips and tricks, keeping an eye on Bucc the whole time.

When a quarter of an hour had passed, though, Rainbow began to worry.

“Uh, Bucc?” she asked, swooping down but not landing. “You okay there buddy?”

“Yeah,” Bucc replied shakilly, “I’m fine mom, gimme a minute.” They continued to stand stock-still, a look of scared concentration on their face.

Rainbow Dash was not fooled.

“Bucc-”

“It’s okay, mom, I got this.”

Slowly and shakilly, Bucc began to unfurl their wings, their whole body trembling with the effort.

Rainbow watched on from above, then decided enough was enough, and came to land by her child.

“Look,” she said awkwardly, “Bucc, I know you don’t like flying-”

“Then why do I have to do it?” Bucc asked, wings snapping shut again as they turned to face their mother. “You never make Glitz and Flash do things they don’t want to do, so why me?”

Rainbow frowned. “Because-”

“Is it because you still want a kid who’ll grow up to join the Wonderbolts like you? Someone to carry on your legacy?” The cream pegasus was getting more and more worked up, feathers ruffling and nostrils flaring.

“No! It’s so you don’t get hurt!” Rainbow interrupted, shocking her child into silence. “Look, I know you’re never gonna be a Wonderbolt, and, yeah, at first I was pretty bummed out about it. But I got over it, and I am over it. But flying is important, and you need to know how to do it.”

“But why?” Bucc whined. “It’s so awful!”

“I know it is,” Rainbow agreed. “Flying blind isn’t fun, but you’re not on the ground all the time, are you? Sometimes we go visit your grandparents in Cloudsdale; sometimes you come to the Academy with me; sometimes we go places that are near the edges of cliffs.”

“That last one doesn’t-”

“I know that last one is technically on the ground but you could still fall there anyway!”

Bucc shut their mouth. They couldn’t see the worried, pained expression on their mother’s face, but they could hear the emotion in her voice.

Rainbow took a deep breath. “What if you fall?” she continued. “What if you’re stood on the edge of Cloudsdale and you fall? What if someone accidentally knocks you off a ledge somewhere? What if you’re stood on a cliff and it crumbles? What then?”

“I-”

“I know you think I’m just doing all this stuff ‘cause I want a kid who can fly, and I know you probably have hundreds of smart answers to all those situations, but I’m being serious here, Bucc; if you can’t fly, what will you do if you fall?”

Bucc didn’t have an answer.

“I just don’t want you to get hurt,” Rainbow admitted. “The reason I want you to fly so bad is so you can save yourself if you do fall. Heck, it’s why your Ma’s been teaching Glitz and Flash to levitate and teleport; I asked her to teach them in case they fell.” She sighed. “If I could, I’d teach you how to do that instead of flying, but you’re not a unicorn, so flying’s all you got.”

Bucc reached out their wings and pulled their mother into a hug, feeling her wings wrap around them in return.

“Okay,” they said eventually. “Okay, I’m ready to do this.” They nodded with determination and pulled out of the hug. “I still hate this, but I’m ready.”

Rainbow Dash smiled.

“That’s my brave Buccaneer.”
