Description

Everyone loves a good headcanon so let's hop right into the one I have regarding Celestia

We all know by now that Princess Celestia and Princess Luna are wanting to retire from being the rulers of Equestria because Twilight is leagues more competent than they are and it’s making them look bad. Better to step down now before ponies catch on that Celestia’s so bored of the job that she’s letting high-society event go to shit for the fun of it, and before Luna spirals into depression and world-domination again because she’s still relegated to the night shift, rarely sees daylight, and is constantly reminded of her own failures through several public holidays and the interior decorations of the very castle she lives in!

So, yes, Celetia and Luna are stepping down and Twilight is going to take their place as the ruler of the world,  but she can’t do everything by herself (raising the sun and moon, watching over the night, maintaining inter-species bonds, hosting snooty nobles, etc). As such, I’ve decided Celestia and Luna need to train up a couple of ponies to take their place (raising sun and moon, dreamwalking) before they step down for good. This way, Twilight doesn’t have to stretch herself quite so thin, and has easy backup from Celestia and Luna before they properly go into retirement. As far as the main public is concerned, though, the Two Sisters have officially vanished from Equestria. The students are a matter for a different post.

Once the new students are fully trained and up in their shiny new positions of power though, what then? What are two ageless, immortal being to do with their spare time? The answer is obvious; return themselves to the mortals they once were and go out into the world to live the lives they never really got to have.

Celestia, being the adrenaline junky she is, takes off for a life of thrill-seeking, and spends many a year throwing herself off waterfalls and ziplining enthusiastically. She goes camping and canoeing and spelunking and rock climbing, travelling all over the known world, and dropping in on a few places time forgot. She still keeps in touch with Luna, of course, and visits her whenever she’s not doing something reckless, but the two decide to hide the fact that they’re sisters in case anyone notices their similarity to the long-since-vanished princesses and gets suspicious. Instead, they’re simple college roommates and best friends. It works astonishingly well.

Though not in disguise completely (too much effort, and no real point now; when she’s back as a normal unicorn no one really thinks she’s the princess), Celestia does give herself a new name; Summer Fun. She feels it’s appropriate considering how many outdoorsy, outgoing activities she’s doing. And that’s another reason she’s not trying to hide her appearance; who on earth would suspect Princess Celestia spends her days battling timberwolves for fun and eating her weight in cake in the evening?

After several years of having non-stop fun, Celestia then turns to fulfilling another dream of hers; having a family. Oh, Celestia’s had children before, but none of them have ever been alicorns, and she’s outlived each and every one of them, as well as each and every one of her partners. Now’s her chance to do it right, to have a nice normal family and live a nice normal life.

So she looks for a partner for a while and eventually meets a lovely pegasus by the name of River Rush, a handsome stallion with a passion for water-based sports. They meet in a waterfall-climbing club and are smitten with each other from the moment they meet. They date for a while, don’t bother getting married because Celestia still finds ceremonies boring and River just doesn’t care, and have a couple of kids, one of whom goes on to become a Wonderbolt.

They live in a nice little cabin in the woods just outside a delightful little village, and go on family camping trips and adventures every opportunity they get. No one ever suspects a thing, not even when Princess Twilight dropped by to see them that one time (she was very busy and stressed and forgot her usual disguise). Celestia and River Rush live in their little house until the day Celestia dies, happy that they got to share their lives and have such a beautiful family.

Equestria is not notified of their ex-monarch’s death as they already believe Celestia and Luna to have gone for good. No point telling them all she was still alive only for the next sentence to be ‘but she’s definitely dead now’. There is the rumour though that the Two Sisters will return to Equestira in it’s darkest hour of need if Princess Twilight should ever fail.

And yah, that’s uh, my headcanon for Celestia’s retirement I guess! I’ll do Luna’s at some point and go into more detail about their students another. Hope you all like it
