So I probably should have introduced Pixie a little bit earlier than I have done because she's been designed for ages, but like, I didn't know what she was like as a child? And I didn't want to jump her straight into a story line in adulthood because it's require jumping other people forward as well and that's not something I want to do just yet.

But I've sussed it now! I know what I'm doing.

So

Pixie here is 4 years younger than Phantomwise, and is the only pegasus in the family. As such, she's always felt kinda left out of a lot of things. When they go to family reunions, she's the only one there who has to eat with her hooves instead of her horn; Twilight and Trixie have a hard time teaching her to do more complex tasks because they've always used magic to do them and have never had to approach it from an earth pony or pegasus standpoint.

Basically, Pixie's life at home can get a little difficult when magic's required to do a lot of things and she just... doesn't have it.

This lead to a fascination with magic in an attempt to have at least something in common with the rest of her family. Much like Twilight when she was little, Pixie dived into reading and learning far beyond her years. She devoured text after text on magical theory, magical history, anything she could get her hooves on, and it was through these texts that she came to a startling realisation; pegasi had magic, too! Why hadn't anyone told her this? Why had no one told the that Pegasus flight was tied into their magical capability like their ability to walk on clouds?

Discovering this pushed Pixie further and further into research, determined to discover everything possible about pegasus magic. It devours her in a way in which it never did Twilight, though this is only really noticed by Trixie.

See, despite having a shared love of magic, reading, and learning, Twilight and Pixie just... aren't very close. Twilight has a tendency to overlook Pixie's insecurities about being the only pegasus in a family of unicorns, brushing them aside with assurances that she was loved just as much as Tommy or Flurry or Charming. She never really sat down and had a proper conversation with Pixie about it, partly because just didn't understand it herself, and partly because she was so busy with running a country and dealing with Tommy. There was also always the unspoken issue that Pixie wouldn't be able to get a formal education in magic for a very long time; magic is a very difficult discipline for a non-unicorn to go into, and Twilight knew this, so, as much as she loved talking to Pixie about magic, she subtly tried to push her love of learning onto a different subject, like science!

This, coupled with how busy Twilight is, serves to push Pixie away form her. The issue with Tommy doens't help either. See, Tommy has a lot of things that Pixie deeply desires, but she doesn't seem to realise this, and doesn't seem to want the things anyway. Take her place at Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns for instance; Pixie would give her left hind leg for a chance to study there, but Tommy just pratts about in class, doesn't read her books, doesn't do her homework, and ends up failing out! It's beyond Pixie's comprehension how she could throw away such a chance! And don't get her started on Tommy's magic use; she's one of the most powerful ponies in Equestria, magically speaking, and what does she do with her power? Does she peruse a career in medicine to help ponies with magical maladies for which there is no known cure? Does she train to be a proper princess so she can one day help their mother rule the country? No, she runs around waving a sword and laser-blasting ghosts. Complete waste of power.

This behaviour doesn't just annoy Pixie, though, it annoys Twilight, who feels much the same way Pixie does about every aspect of everything Tommy does. This means Twilight spends far too much time telling Tommy off for having the audacity to live her life the way she wants to, and also means she spends just as much time overlooking Pixie for all the good things she's been doing. Pixie's reading well above her age? Doesn't matter, Twilight's too busy trying to get Tommy to stop falling asleep in class. Pixie comes top of her class? That's lovely darling, but Tommy's completely failed school.

So yeah, Pixie is small, angry, and often overlooked. Trixie notices everything going on, and she tries her best, but Pixie never really wants to hear it. All she can do is be there for her when she falls and help her pick herself up and put herself back together.
