Description
Darn freaking Canadian airplanes being so adorable.
Well, I'm Canadian, but these fellas are just too darn amazing.
Also, when you draw a maple leaf right for ONE TIME, kiss that luck goodbye, maple leaves are a pain in the ass to copy.
I have an unpainted model of a Voodoo on my nerd shelf of airplanes.
So here~! Have a CF-100 Canuck and a CF-101 Voodoo in close formation. The Canuck's a guy and the Voodoo's a girl.
Add a few more to my characters~!

Yeah the Clunks weren't really all that popular, were they? At least, they weren't well known. A shame really.

Our Belgian Air Force was equipped with 53 of them, originally spread over 11, 349 and 350 (AW) Squadron, the 11 Squadron ones replacing Armstrong Whitworth (Gloster) Meteor NF.11s, and the 349/350 Squadron ones replacing Hawker Hunter F.4s. 11 Squadron was disbanded late 1959/early 1960, so theirs were parted between 349 and 350 Squadron. They had a very short career, though - the first ones were in early 1958; the last ones were retired in 1964 after 349 & 350 Squadron converted to F-104G Starfighters. Four were lost during their career with the Belgian Air Force (a véry good safety record!), but the surviving ones were gone so quickly that when the Royal Army Museum inquired after one for preservation... all had already been scrapped.
So in 1970, one was purchased (for the princely sum of C$ 1!!) from the RCAF, and this one is now on display (still in Canadian colours) in Brussels...

Funny thing is, though - one of the original Belgian order survived by accident... in Canada.
RCAF 18731 was supposed to become AX-47 with the Belgian Air Force, however during a test flight out of Malton, she was severely damaged, so much so that she was put aside, and RCAF 18738 took her place instead (the original order ran from serials 18685 to 18737) So 18738 became AX-47 and as such ended up being scrapped in 1964 (not even a year after she had been withdrawn).
As for RCAF 18731... she was restored, taken up by the Royal Canadian Air Force, and became RCAF 100731. As such, she was preserved by the RMC - www.bigthings.ca/airplanes/pic…

How was she damaged? Might you know?

It appears she had some kind of fire, which caused damage that left her unavailable for quite a long while. As the CF-100s were to be ferried across the Atlantic soon, they decided not to repair her for inclusion in the delivery, but to transfer her equipment to another frame instead (Belgian CF-100s were fitted with a US-delivered targetting computer, of the same kind that was fitted on the F-89D Scorpion). So she became a standard RCAF CF-100 Mk.5... which kinda saved her in the end.

I think the linework could use a dash of cleanup in spots, but it's nice to see some of the less well-known aircraft in this art. (I really should take another stab at atmospheric craft sooner or later...)

Thanks for the constructive criticism~!
I really appreciate it.
I'd like to see you draw these guys or other less known aircraft sometime.

ThunderArc In reply to SergeanTrooper [2013-12-23 06:30:40 +0000 UTC]
Yes~! Us Canadians use only the purest of maple syrup from out overpriced F-35s (not bought yet but close enough ) to our WestJets~!

wouldn't waste the precious syrup on that, but ok.
But you're like the Russia Mig-25 Fovbat running on vodka(no shitting).

They weren't called "Flying Bars" for nothing There was an incident recorded in which a squadron had to scramble and they could only get two or three fighters in the air because the rest had been "tapped" on the sly.
