Description A new category, which I think fits these pictures better.. this is a character from a story I'm working on. Her name is Hanalah (every story needs a naive bookworm with a secret unquenchable lust for bloodshed). She only has one book, Tales of the Sea, which is fairly self-explanatory; her father is a silk merchant who sent her off to seek her fortune in the big city, but all she does is read that book over and over again. When she's not slaughtering people, that is.

'm using a 3px brush that I made to mimic a pencil, and some brushes I made to mimic paintbrushes. One asks, "why not just use real media?" Well I'll tell you why. Paint is expensive.

I'm only uploading this because it represents fairly accurately where my work is now, in terms of technique and focus. I'm becoming quickly obsessed with a more painterly style of illustration and I'm comfortable enough with anatomy not to agonise over it, which I think is helping my characters to look less like stick people and more like meat people... I'm getting there, in other words, but not quite there yet!

This is going in my portfolio because it's normal enough not to scare away potential employers.

You are so good at portraying moods with color. Is it study or it flows through you naturally?

...aside from the blonde hair, that was me in high school. O.o
Anyway. Love the dusty background and the sense of sunlight through a dirty window. The muted colors are beautiful.

I love this. Absolutely worship it. The plot, the lighting, the love in her eyes as she's reading the book, I adore it!

Annoyingly the only thing I can think to say is that you have nailed that character. Inside every bookworm there lurks a lust for bloody violence.

I really like this. The sparse and shadowy background gives it a spooky, isolated feel.

Thank you if there's any expert on "sparse" backgrounds it's me (I'm notoriously lazy) but I like to give the impression of great space and complexity where there is none at all!

Oh how I wish I could do this. So few lines. Simplified anatomy, but just fine. I could go on and on. The candle is a Rembrandt.

Thank you so much! But I'm afraid the few lines is an illusion, I always have to do three or four sketches beforehand

Very lovely, I adore the background and atmosphere. Who knew that behind this childish wonder lies a beast? D:

The paintery-brushes are my favourite as well. I like how you used them.

Awwww. This is so sweet-looking for a bloodthirsty bookworm. I love her expression. She looks so into it.

Hurrah for bookworms!

I do like this style. The simple style does make the picture look interesting. I do see some misty effects there! Here I am, mentioning random things! Who cares about "mists?"

I'd prefer Photoshop over paints. Paints do get messy. It would be uncomfortable to deal with acrylics on clothes.

The mists is a new thing for me. It's actually light sparkling on dusty air, but I'd only attempted it once before and never with paint.. so I cheated and used a gradient

Speaking of gradients, it seems that many artists use them. Back then, I would always wonder how everyone made a dark to light background in their digital art. Now I know why, thanks to Corel.
