Description
Sorry for the huge fileBy the way, something I forgot to mention in the tutorial. A lot of people say "why don't you just put the figures in on top of the background?" I guess this is a valid way to do it, but for me, I find that the figures end up looking like they're floating in the environment. If you're going for an animation-cel look, fine, but if you're painting both in the same style I think it's worth the extra time to paint it all on the same layer. That way they're sewn into the scene, not patched on top.
Thanks for all the support guys

Thank you for this tutorial! It's helped me understand and realize a lot about environment painting - I think I can go along with more confidence (and a lot less layers) in my drawing and painting now ^-^
Take care! And thanks again!

this is very useful thank you,
i was wondering, would you by any chance know why photoshop saves pictures so their colour becomes dulled, i keep drawing things with bright vivid colours but when i look at them as a jpeg or on Deviantart, they are dulled in colour and every thing becomes off. it's kinda annoying. (even my main featured picture on my page is completely off colour, he's supposed to have a bright red coat, instead its gone orange DX )

Mine does that too. Can't help you, sorry, but I'm going to get my comp looked at soon to see if there's anything I can do about it. In the meantime I just increase the saturation and adjust the colors slightly on most of my pictures to get them closer to what they looked like when I painted them. (Use "save for web", it does the exact same thing but at least you can see a preview of the image before it saves.)

I have a question about lineart/sketches. It looks like you initially just paint over the lineart, but do you eventually delete the layer? Or do keep it as a subtle part of the painting?
Thanks for the advice!

I tend to block in colors under the sketch and then merge before I begin painting.

Oh, okay. So it kind of becomes a part of the painting, right? Thanks again.

It seems like you put a lot of work and thought into this--and I love that you use "environment" and not "background". So many people forget the where-matters-just-as-much-as-who rule, myself included.

I love this tutorial! I applied it to the classic "draw a sphere" exercise, and it worked out well...much better than I'd have done with multiple layers, I think. It also has a paintlike effect that I enjoy.
What exactly is the animation-cel look? Is that sorta the CG anime type?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
thundercake In reply to Kaleris [2009-01-09 08:06:19 +0000 UTC]
It's usually a painted or illustrated static background with cel-shaded figures and active objects on top. Like in Scooby Doo. You know how you can always tell which book the bad guy is going to pick up because it's drawn in cel like the characters..
And hey, your sphere came out great, I'm glad it helped

Awww, thanks. You've now gotten me addicted to the dropper tool for blending (I'm using a brush with opacity -> pen pressure, and picking up intermediates that way). It works much better than the smudge, which made things blurry.

thundercake In reply to Kaleris [2009-01-09 08:26:07 +0000 UTC]
It gets to be one fluid motion after a while. I've seen some of my friends set a button on their stylus to the dropper so they can click and paint, but I just set mine to a convenient key and tap it all the time

This helps a lot, I hate that I'm one of those people who never puts backgrounds...err environments in my...things, so right now I'm forcing myself to do this whole thing with a real environment and I plan on adding at least some semblance of a world around my characters. I was actually doing some of these things unconsciously already which is a good sign I think, ha ha.

Holy crap!
the dynamic opacity is what I've been missing! Its like...painting. I can blend stuff..and things and slfkaieifhdskfh!!!!!!1111
Hopefully I never stop learning new things about photoshop. It would make moments like this less enjoyable.
I got a tablet years ago and it never worked like I thought it should...and now it does (well it does the same thing it always did, but now I'm more fully utilizing it)
YAY!!!!!

A very nicely written, informative and clear tutorial. Even for a noob like me, I understood it I think some photoshop tutorials get bogged down with different brush sizes, opacities, flow and whatnot, but your instructions use theories from a tradish painting background which I can understand a lot more easier. Yay!

I cannot believe you only use one layer! I'm a total layer whore! I'm the type of person who uses a separate layer for freckles alone Usually, I use an entire folder for each body part (arms, head, torso, etc) and each folder comprises of individual layers each for base color, shadow1, shadow2, light, etc. Crazy.
