Description
Sorry for the huge fileBy the way, something I forgot to mention in the tutorial. A lot of people say "why don't you just put the figures in on top of the background?" I guess this is a valid way to do it, but for me, I find that the figures end up looking like they're floating in the environment. If you're going for an animation-cel look, fine, but if you're painting both in the same style I think it's worth the extra time to paint it all on the same layer. That way they're sewn into the scene, not patched on top.
Thanks for all the support guys

awesome tutorial! How much time do you spend on a painting like this?
I really like how the scenes you create have this sort of the very last bit of twilight feel. Good stuff ^^

cool! that's like a day's work.. I have to try my best to keep a quick pace when I'm painting -_-
If i dont i end up painting to uptight and then it takes to long and I become way more perfectionistic then my skills can handle.
Do you think speed might come with a steadier workflow?

For me it did. When I work every day I just get used to the motions so I can crank stuff out pretty quickly. But when I'm feeling inspired it's a lot faster It's not always good...I can get pretty sloppy if I work quickly.

You don't smudge and you use one layer?!
I loved your art before but now I just flat out respect and admire your skill.
Thank you for the tutorial. Sadly, I'm one of those people who think of it as a 'background.' I shall try to improve though!

I used to, but since I stopped I find it's a lot easier to just use the brush. When you're switching tools and layers it takes more time and thought.

8 hours, thereabouts. I take breaks though, so probably less.

thundercake In reply to waywardnonnie [2008-12-28 03:09:22 +0000 UTC]
The same way, basically, though they do have more tools for it like "add water" etc. I'm not very good with OC.

For photoshop and the dull colors:
The pictures you see on the web doesnt have any kind of color management on them, that is problably your problem. You can either turn off all color management in photoshop or use sRGB as your main color space. Either work fine to me.
Or, after you have finished the image, go to edit>convert to color space and pick sRGB.
This is usually my problem; hope it can help ya.

thundercake In reply to SulaMoon [2008-12-28 00:48:12 +0000 UTC]
You can't turn off color managing in PSCS3, and I've been setting it to the srgb profile but the settings, they do nothing!

SulaMoon In reply to thundercake [2008-12-28 13:27:04 +0000 UTC]
What I do, in the color management settings window, under color management policies, there are 3 options, one for each color depth (RGB, CMYK, Gray). That's where I turn everything off.
Anyway, this was a great tutorial - thanks for that!

How are you saving your images in Photoshop? Save for Web always screws up colours, but Save As > JPG (with the option to embed the colour profile checked, working in sRGB) doesn't. We both use CS3 Mac, I think. My images saved that way look fine in Camino (fork of Mozilla for Mac only) and I don't even think it supports colour profiles. Firefox does, but I think it's a hidden setting you need to turn on because it affects performance by about, oh, 2% and people moan.
These tutorials are incredibly helpful. I've been watching you for years, and I can't believe how much your work has changed. It's like a different person altogether.

Save for Web actually handles colours quite well.

I find that Save for Web causes colours to look fine when viewed in anything but a browser. In a browser, they become washed out. Saving with an embedded colour profile works for me. This is on a Mac, I have no idea what they look like on Windows and I don't really care

Ah yeah it didn't work I can't figure out what's wrong.
If it's not too much trouble, would you do me a huge favor and screencap your color settings? If it's working for you, it might be a problem with mine.

It's the same regardless of save for web or save as, but I don't remember if I clicked "embed colour profile".. I should have, but let me try it and see what happens. (I don't have this problem with Painter, just PS.)

pikeletxo In reply to thundercake [2008-12-28 01:34:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Painter is a lot better when it's not crashing all over the place. You can always import the psd to Painter and save it from there. Maybe they just want you to buy Photoshop CS4

thundercake In reply to pikeletxo [2008-12-28 01:36:36 +0000 UTC]
lol it takes me like a full minute to drag the brush across the canvas in painter.. When I get a faster machine I'm sure I'll love it, but for now it's too slow to work in.
When I import the PSD, it does the same thing with the colors. It's definitely something wrong with the way I'm seeing colors in PS.
