Description
This was a really fun image to do! This illustration is going in the Thorns calendar, which the amazing *unwanderinggirl is putting together. I don't do sunny beach scenes very often so this was very challenging...I think I painted and repainted that water about a dozen times. The characters are my Iale DuPont (the redhead) and Lacey Lovell, who is played by ~AussieMum . Iale and Lacey are old enemies who have ended up working together.

This is fantastic. Their expressions do it.

In my opinion, you totally nailed the "used to be enemies, but now working together".
Kudos.

I love how they're looking away from each other with those annoyed expressions. I feel like right away I understand a part of their character and story!

Just look at those colors. The color choices, the shading, it's all brilliant... not to mention the linework. And I love the foliage in the background... your illustrations always kick so much ass, it's crazy

I make custom brushes that work really well for filler trees, and then I go back and add in some select details.

Yes. It's just that the proper term for a midget is "Little Person" or "Dwarf" (since their condition is called Dwarfism). I've heard that they don't like to be called "Midgets" so I try not to use that term.
When I saw her she automatically made me think of the Dwarf in Pirates of the Caribbean, who I like, which is why I was like 'OoOo I love Dwarvish pirates!' But was I wrong about her condition? Is she just very short, as opposed to actually suffering for Dwarfism?

She has dwarfism, but LPs are not called "dwarvish". That's a fantasy term.

Oops! You're right, sticking the V in there makes it a fantasy term. Should've said 'Dwarfish' with an f according to dictionary.com. Which makes sense. Sorry about that mistake!
Anyways, she's cool! My whole point was that I like her and that I like the idea of a little pirate

The foliage in the background is as detailed as that in the foreground, so there's not as much depth to the piece as there could be. It also distracts the viewer (or at least, this viewer) from the lovely characters, which I assume are the focal point. I really like how you rendered the water.

This is different than what you usually do, but it looks good!
The vegetation is delicious and I love how the two characters have to work together even though they hate each other.
Ive noticed that the shadows are a bit odd; some of them are angled straight down (the character's), but some of the others look like they are angled to the right (like the boat's).
The character's shadings are beautiful, but are in the wrong "context" to me: in a sunny day like in this pic, its white light thats coming down, so the character's clothing and skin should reflect more white (even tanned people!). Right now it looks like they are reflecting yellow candlelight, especially compared to the environment around them.

Other than that the picture is fantasticaly awesome, it makes me miss summer ;(

Thanks for the critique! you're dead right about the lighting, I was afraid of washing out the forms but I definitely could have gone brighter. You're also right about the boat's shadow, haha, I must have been drunk doing this or something Will revise!

l am pretty well enamored of that water- it does show you worked hard on it. l find the colours here really fun, just because the background feels like...light pinky-beige sand and darling teal water, and then you have these super-tan, disdgruntled looking ladies standing in it, but the colours are reflected some in their outfits. lt's a neat look.

My god, the details and the colours in the vegetation are amazing. D: It looks so thick and lush ... and humid.
For not doing bright beach scenes very often, you really nailed it - all that repainting certainly didn't go to waste. What sort of method did you use, exactly, to get the transparent effect of the sand under the water at the shore?

Can I just say that I think the very BEST part of this is the fact that their shadows convey that it's midday and just make the sun feel SOOO bright and overbearing? You nailed that awesomely!
