Description Done for my very last class at VCU, back in April. I suck at dragons, for real. I had to reference a lot of paintings from d&d manuals. So this is really not my style, but it was a good learning experience.

edit - please don't rag on my teacher, I like that he always held me to a high standard.

This is great. My only critique is that the head seems small compared to the rest of the body.

Do you really think your dragons are...? Look, those guys were grown up like that, they inherited some world and named it fantasy world. Before them, there were like 128 kinds of dragons, all you wanted and now there are only 4 (red, black, green, gold)+crystal+fairy+Chinese. And they said that they should all look the same. Or not, but it bacame canonic like the Holy Bible. If you want something, forget the things you read in an old book. Forget everything you knew from the books. And that shall be your style.

The happy part of the comment

- What do you want?
- Er... em... I came to slay you!
- Yes, sure. Look. Be a nice kid and go playing else where with your dagger - picks up the knight and puts him up on a high tree by his cape

- What do you want.
- I want you to bless my sword!
- I shall bless theee....

- What do you want, kid?
- You killed my father! Burned my city. And I shall...
- No, you are misguided. They raised you and I am your father...

I've missed your work, and that is one BIG dragon... ancient worm is my guess, I'm surprised Tiamat let's him out of the cave....

I like the lighting on this piece, and the feeling of overwhelming despair for our little adventurer.

Take care.

why did the teacher hate it? Just the content or the way it was executed? My favorite part is the corner with the little dude--the back-lighting is fuuuun!

definitely has that DnD feel, i like the color a lot too.
Im not sure why your teacher disliked the piece but i may have to do with composition and story. I would suggest pushing your warrior a little over to the left so he is framed more by the opening behind the dragon. I'm also a little confused by the action in this picture- the warrior seems to be rising up to attack but the dragon is very passive and out of swinging distance. Also his cape is flapping the opposite direction that your fire sparks are rising.

btw- good to see you back on deviant, i really missed seeing your work.

"Yes, yes, I'm very impressed with your sword but some other time perhaps. Now if you will excuse me, Child of Eve, I'm already late for an appointment."

------------

Don't beat yourself up, your dragon is very well done. Well, your teacher has no soul, that's obvious.

This dragon looks better than a lot that I've seen in D&D Monster Manuals. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this dragon It may not have all the gabillion textures and nuances of a Todd Lockwood dragon but I think it reads well and the colors are quite nice. And, the image even has a background!! I say keep it around just in case you want to submit to Wizards of the Coast.

Why did your teacher hate it? Because it was a dragon? idk, looks pretty awesome to me! I like the areas of concentrated detail - really makes for a nice pathway for my eyes leading around the dragon. And the musculature looks great too! He looks like one heavy duty dragon! ^_^

EXCELLENT! I would totally want him on my side in a fight... but then again... he is so huge and powerful he might just take a simple step and kill us all accidentally if he were on the same side as us... Must be what bugs feel like about us!

I love his hugeness - SO POWERFUL!!!

thundercake In reply to morganagod [2010-11-15 17:40:59 +0000 UTC]

it's just sort of static and uninteresting

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

morganagod In reply to thundercake [2010-11-15 17:52:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah. I think that has more to do with the format than with your skill and it wouldn't take much to fix. Hopefully, the teacher saw what the "problem" was and helped you with it. I mean, this is very very well made. I wish I had this kind of skill most of the time, but it's on a perfect square, which is already a resolved shapes and that can lend itself to the mundane. All you would have to do would be to crop off the sides, and it would become a lot stronger.

Personally, I think it's fine as is, but if the teacher didn't help you make it better, then that is a terrible teacher. imho ofcourse

thundercake In reply to morganagod [2010-11-15 18:06:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I intentionally used a square format because it was more challenging. It was my last piece at school so my teacher didn't have any input but the critique, but in any case he was a marvelous instructor and I learned a lot from him.

morganagod In reply to thundercake [2010-11-15 18:22:18 +0000 UTC]

Groovy. Taking up challenges is how we grow. I'm reluctant to critique as I see it as inherently harmful to that process so I hope you didn't take my suggestion as one. Like I said, this is fantastic.
