Description
Edit 2-26-2011 A little bird told me this was suggested to ^Mollinda to be a DD! It almost made it, but not quite. However, it did make it into a news article featuring almost-DD's that still deserve recognition! [link] Please fave the article and fave the other almost-works too! I'm happy I was even ever close ;A;Thank you for the support!
-Edit- Fixed image a bit. D: Also, for those of you who want to know, each butterfly and leaf took 5-7 minutes each. :3
Earthly fire sets aflame
when the leaves begin to fall
Death creeps in from soil
Thus they to descend upon all
Wind's spite
and death's might
make a powerful duo
for the eye to see
Together they work to drive
the futtering birds to flee
The guardian watches from below
as they escape their doom
Yet as his eyes glisten,
he knows he will see them soon
Thine eye sees not what is truth as his do
when those birds fly high
In truth the flutterers
are falling through the sky.
yay poem time...
Oh god. I can't feel my hand.
So this is my OC, Kuthren, who I have now fondly dubbed (nickname'd) "Kin" (or Kinny). :3 Originally his markings were green, but I updated him by giving him the power to change color with the leaves.
So, Kinny's favorite season is fall because he gets to be gold then. D: The butterflies you see are my creation as well...their bottom wings are shaped like leaves and their top wings have a distracting pattern.
Because of their vibrant colors, they can only survive in the fall season, so they migrate from forest to forest to escape the winter chill and frosty white-ness.
Since Kinny loves fall, well...he travels with them often, but he's decided to stay behind for now, so he watches them fall through the sky. <3
FFFF. I love this so.
My dream has been to one day recieve a Daily Deviation, and i have a really good feeling about this one. XD
Chara, art, poem, butterflis (c) me
paper (c) some poor dead tree :c
Pleeeeaaase critique? D:

This is absolutely stunning! The tonal work in the wolf's fur is simply amazing but what really captures my eyes is how the face of the wolf is a similar texture to the butterflies' wings so it blends in with them but still retains it's own form.

Thank you! Sorry for the long reply. Yes, I was exploring different ways of connecting patterns, and I'm glad you saw the connection with the butterflies ;3

xD" It has its flaws. :3 The best thing about it was I didn't draw it for anyone else (but me), it wasn't a project, and it wasn't planned. I just picked up a pencil. My art nowadays seems more forced...so I hope to get back to art like this ;3;
Thanks for the kind words!

SpectrumSempra In reply to Thunderflight [2011-02-27 19:36:16 +0000 UTC]
Well I think you put a lot of creativity in it and yeah I know what you mean, it means a lot more and looks better when you draw for yourself, not being forced :3
and no problem!!

Er, sorry for the double reply, but I was just wondering...
When you say "I can't feature them all", well, what perhaps made this not get a DD? I'd like to know so I could improve in the future. ;3;
Th-thank you!

Nothing in particular - I get roughly 20 suggestions for every "slot" - that's very competitive. So I refuse a lot simply because I really liked another one - you know what I mean? It's tough to choose :3
If you want critique, I would say try and be consistent. The wolf (?) is outlined with a hard line, but nothing else is. Rather than contrast, it makes the leaves look a little messy as their shape isn't defined.
Also with pencil crayons I think it's good practice to shade in one direction - shading around an object, means everything's going in different directions. I think hatching (shading in one direction, usually diagonally) and cross hatching (shading in the opposite direction on top) look neat and if all your lines go in the same direction blending is MUCH easier and much neater
You use colour beautifully and the wolf is very well drawn, but as I said I think it's just really those finishing touches to improve on :3

Okay, thank you very much! ^^" Another thing is that my scanner is difficult to work with and makes things look scratchier than they are. (For example, if I make a dark line and erase it, the scanner will pick it up in the image.) But I'm not gonna point blame at my scanner Dx" It's only 20% of the cause of the problems you listed :3
Thank you kindly for the critique. I'll definitely work harder from now on to improve on that! ><

I know that one - scanners hate pencil crayon! I sympathise greatly!

Thunderflight In reply to Mollinda [2011-02-27 01:21:39 +0000 UTC]
I was delusioned when I was a novice that it was my scanner's fault, but I soon learned the true reason why scanners are infamous xD
too bad I'm a pencil artist specifically. ;__; Haha thanks, it's not too bad, it just ruins quality ><

Mollinda In reply to Thunderflight [2011-02-27 21:11:32 +0000 UTC]
Try using your pencil crayons very lightly and layering the colour to get as few pencil strokes as possible - it's easier the less waxy the crayons are. So soft watercolour crayons work brilliantly.

Thunderflight In reply to Mollinda [2011-02-27 21:30:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks kindly for the tip! ;; I think I'll get some watercolor ones then ;3
Although, my scanner tends not to pick up the color when I don't color with at least medium pressure. I'll just have to layer more extensively. xD

Oh gosh, this is amazing. I love the colours and the way everything melts together so beautifully β such attention to detail! Also, Kinny is drawn beautifully as a character. You can really see feeling and personality coming through his eyes.
What I find most impressive, though, is the way the butterflies and some of the stuff at the edge of the picture looks slightly blurry, but the middle is perfectly in focus β itβs like a photograph and it really makes the picture pop out, but still retains the wonderful drawing style.
Since you asked for critique... Iβm far from an expert at drawing, but one thing I thought looked a bit weird is the shading on his face... the petal-like sections, if that makes sense. Itβs particularly apparent on his muzzle and forehead β under his closest eye it looks okay, I think, but on his muzzle it doesnβt really look like muscle, it looks a bit like the skin of a fruit or a balloon or something. :/ The picture is quite stylised though, so I donβt know if thatβs intentional.
Amazing work.
