I have been blessed to get to do a collab with the amazing and kind abosz007 . It's so cool to me to see how our styles meshed together for this piece.

Javier settled into Vessel's saddle and wiggled a big to get as comfortable as the tight jockey's position allowed. Vessel danced beneath him and mouthed at the bit, fussing and sidestepping whenever Javier took his attention away from the colt. Other horses galloped or breezed on the track, some dressed in exercise gear and others in silks like Javier was.

Keeping Vessel on the outside of the track was no easy feat as the son of Carbon Monoxide leaned into the bit as hard as he could. He wanted to go fast, but their trainer, Cyrus, had instructed Javi to keep Vessel in the slow lane that morning.

"Just an easy gallop," the silver-haired trainer had instructed.

Halfway through their warmup, Javier caught a glimpse of a black and red form streaking across the rail on the inside. He turned his head to stare. The horse and jockey had to be clocking :10 flat, easy. Vessel sensed his distraction and immediately took advantage, pulling and pulling, tugging his head to throw it as high up as he could. Javier cursed and leaned back in the stirrups to slow Vessel back down. He would have to talk to Cyrus about a martingale for the colt if Vessel kept this up.

After their workout, Javier was walking a still-prancing Vessel toward the track exit when the black and red pair came up alongside them. He recognized the jockey as an up-and-comer, but the filly was unfamiliar to him.

"That was an impressive breeze," Javier said neutrally. "Who's your girl?"

The other man shot him a grin. "Her name is Ever Given." He reached down and patted her sweaty neck proudly.

Javier flicked his gaze over the pair. Red, blue, and gold silks marked them as Royal Pirates. Ever Given was a massive filly and he wondered who in her pedigree had given her such height. She had good bones and fast speeds. But would she be able to withstand the distance and stress of the Trinity Cup?

Javier wondered the same thing about his own mount as the colt hopped and bucked slightly. He fussed back at Vessel and lifted the butt of his crop to his helmet in farewell to the other jockey before refocusing on his mount. He shouldn't allow himself to get distracted, not while on this particular spitfire of a colt.
