Description

Welcome to my ultimate wings tutorial.

This tutorial will demonstrate how I create wings.

Through this tutorial you will learn:

1. How to draw your own digital feather using a mouse or pen tablet.

2. How to sketch out a rough wing outline and feathers.

3. How to position and shade feathers.

4. How to use the burn tool to add depth to a wing.

This tutorial is meant to create a fantasy wing, not a realistic one.

This tutorial is copyright to *thy-darkest-hour
The wings it contains may not be replicated. This tutorial is meant as a guide, not as a means to re-create my wing set. Please don't use it for that purpose.

You shouldn't really call this "Ultimate Wing Tutorial", since it doesn't go over the structure of wings nor does it provide tips on crafting wings as opposed to wholesale copying your style of wing.

I doubt this wing "tutorial" would be very well accepted with my style -- a good wing tutorial does not instruct in one style (as you have done here) but teaches about the basic structure of a wing so others may take it and apply to their style.

However, I must say, these are beautiful wings. They are just not deserving of a tutorial all of their own.

This is not meant to be a structure tutorial, but rather a method tutorial. I have no intentions of teaching anatomy. Rather, my intent is to show how to draw a 'fantasy' feather and construct a 'fantasy' wing.

I don't care how wings are supposed to be built. Everyone has a right to show their method, if others want to learn how to draw a digital feather using photoshop like I do, then they may and if they want to learn a basic shading technique from how I do it, then they may.

Resolution1: I remove the tutorial entirely (not going to happen.)
Resolution2: I'm going to remove the word 'Ultimate' that you take so much offense at and am shortening the visual portion.

I never said you didn't have a right to. On the other hand, I have a right to object to said tutorial. Resolution two would suit me fine.

I have to disagree. This is not meant to be a structure tutorial, but rather a method tutorial. I have no intentions of teaching anatomy. Rather, my intent is to show how to draw a 'fantasy' feather and construct a 'fantasy' wing.

When I wanted to learn how to draw feathers digitally and learn how to make fantasy wings, all I could find were structure tutorials which weren't helpful to me at all.

But they did explain how feathers, and subsequently wings, are built, yes? And from there you developed a method for your own style of wings?

That is my sole complaint -- this is useless unless you want your style of digital wings to become genericon.

As the proverb goes, "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime."

Thy-Darkest-Hour In reply to MasterInsanity [2012-05-30 18:04:04 +0000 UTC]

They explained nothing about feathers and gave a few outline images.

I developed my method by looking at wings that were made by other artists and wondering: How on earth do I make one with okay looking shading; How the heck do I draw a feather because cut out photographic images don't work; Can I even do this without a tablet; etc.

How to build a wing tutorials are essentially useless unless you want to draw a bird wing outline.

Have you ever heard of `majnouna 's tutorials? That's the kind of wing tutorial I was talking about. This tutorial , as well as drawing from life, is how I learned to draw wings.

I realize that you may not have found a tutorial to draw wings the way you see them in your head, but the struggle to figure out how to do it is what made them yours.

I haven't. However, I've never had a problem drawing wings. I can turn out a decent line-art of a feathered wing in 10 minutes. Because I have dial-up right now, I can't view these very well, so I ask: Does it anywhere in the three tutorials show you how to draw a digital feather in photoshop and how to shade that feather once you've placed it into a drawn wing-grid?

Do you see that? We both learned about feathers in about the same manner, however mine is adapted to my style while yours is adapted to your style.

That's not something you can make a tutorial about, unless you want them all to look like yours.

I see it now. I'm not certain of the point you're trying for with this, but what I see here is a digital (made with photoshop) feather vs. a traditionally sketched feather.

MasterInsanity In reply to Thy-Darkest-Hour [2012-05-31 03:54:46 +0000 UTC]

My point was that our styles are so radically different that calling this an "Ultimate" Wing Tutorial would be incorrect, however this has been corrected.

Let me repeat myself: things like drawing feathers and shading vary on the artist. It is a part of your style. No one method will work for everyone so you must teach the basics so that their style works itself out.

I'll produce a visual aid for you, just give me a little bit.

While I can appreciate the detail that you go into, using the same feather for an entire wing can make it feel very monotone. And then just copy-flipping it so you have two can throw off the shading of an entire picture (unless the artist makes a new feather or fixes the shading through the use of many layers.

The technique for creating a feather is different from the ways I've seen, and it works, however it is not 'anatomically' correct for a feather when used in the places that you use it. yes, there will be fluffy feathers at the top of the wing, but the rest of the wing should have smooth edged feathers. If all of a bird's feathers were fluffy, the air would flow right through the wing, and the bird would have a hard time in flight.

The rest of your wing, aside from the types of feathers, is anatomically correct.

If I am coming off as harsh, I do not mean to. By understanding the anatomy of a wing and how the feathers work, you could improve this tutorial tenfold.

I rated this critique as Unfair because I did not intend to make a bird wing, I had no intention of an anatomically correct wing, but one that is visually pleasing. I state plainly that this is meant to be fantasy. And while I understand that not everyone likes my fluffy feathers, the majority seem to have a good response, and for that, I'm happy.

The vision of this piece is obviously very clear, and I like very much how you separated the feather tutorial for us to understand your feather technique. I have never seen a tutorial on wings in this much detail; it's amazing how detailed every single pannel is... I can't imagine how long it must have taken.

Some suggestions for improvement would be a slightly less dark colour scheme, and maybe a skinnier layout for the tutorial with less panels in each horizontal line (as it can be a bit overwhelming.) Some colour here and there would have been nice too!

Overall I found this very helpful and I hope I get around to trying it sometime. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Thank you so very much for taking the time to critique my tutorial, I truely appreciate it. I'm really glad that you see the tutorial as being detailed and that the separation of the two parts is clear, I briefly had the thought to put some sort of fancy looking bar between the two parts.

As for the darkness, I felt that the feathers show up best against the black, however, I am looking for a good color that I'll eventually use as standard for all of my tutorials. I was completely pleased with how wide the tutorial is, it is this way because I wanted to attatch it to the feather tutorial that I had all ready posted separately, and it was all ready black too heh. Thanks for mentioning your thoughts on those matters, definately for consideration in my next tutorial.

I'm really glad that you found this tutorial helpful and I hope that you find the opportunity to try it out
