Description

Welcome to my ultimate wings tutorial.

This tutorial will demonstrate how I create wings.

Through this tutorial you will learn:

1. How to draw your own digital feather using a mouse or pen tablet.

2. How to sketch out a rough wing outline and feathers.

3. How to position and shade feathers.

4. How to use the burn tool to add depth to a wing.

This tutorial is meant to create a fantasy wing, not a realistic one.

This tutorial is copyright to *thy-darkest-hour

The wing, working straight through took about, I'm guessing, 4 hours, add another hour or so for the tutorial. Thanks by the way, glad you like it.

Thanks so very much I'm glad that you found my tutorial to be fave worthy, and more so, that you think it to be easily understood, that's the goal after all, because when I first began making wings, I could find no decent tutorials.

I'm mostly a paper/pencil/inking kind of artist, and rarely do anything other than color with a computer, but if I ever wanted to learn to do more I will definitely look up your tutorials. The detail is amazing for a step-by-step, and the instructions are simple yet informative.

I would suggest a bit more color to draw the eye along through the text as much as it is drawn by the wings, and perhaps a small sample of what wings look like in other perspectives (or even a link to a picture in which you used this technique). I do applaud the separation of the feather from the wings, a kind of layered learning a lot of tutorials miss out on.

Great tut, keep it up!

Let me just say that most of my wings start out on paper drawn with a pencil before they ever land on photoshop. I'm glad that you find the instructions simple, I hope that they're easy to follow for a broad range of skill levels.

Awesome tutorial! Though, personally, I think the wing would be a bit thicker where it connects with the body. A lot of people make wings really thin there, which doesn't make sense in terms of logical anatomy.

Thy-Darkest-Hour In reply to ShellyTheLast [2012-05-26 00:12:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter of the connection, logically, it would make sense for the connection to be wider, but appearance wise, I personally like the thinner connection. When I upload these wings as stock, of course anyone who uses them can add feathers where they like

While I totally get the need for watermarks, is it absolutely necessary to put them on every single step? It sort of detracts from the image, and makes it a bit difficult to see what you're trying to draw. Not only that, but you're teaching others how to draw something that looks exactly like this, so why is there a need to ensure your drawing is strictly yours? Either way, its a pretty handy tutorial, so thank you for sharing it.

Thy-Darkest-Hour In reply to pipedreamdragon [2012-05-26 00:17:10 +0000 UTC]

The goal is to teach others how to create a wing, not copy mine exactly, I prefer the watermarks to at least help prevent copying to a small extent.

Glad you like the tutorial.

I don't know, all your feathers look really furry, the outside ones a usually really smooth

See the left picture > [link]

Thy-Darkest-Hour In reply to Yuen1 [2012-05-25 13:34:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they do appear a bit furry, but that is what I intended, this is after all, a fantasy tutorial and is not meant to portray a real bird wing or feather type as mentioned in the deviation description: "This tutorial is meant to create a fantasy wing, not a realistic one."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuen1 In reply to Thy-Darkest-Hour [2012-05-25 17:11:02 +0000 UTC]

Even so, making the end feathers sleek looks better aesthetically as well, doesnt really have anything to do with the fact that its "Fantasy" I wasn't saying you needed to make the whole thing totally realistic, just those few details that make it look better.
