Description
so I guess KH2 doesn't actually come out until today (3/29)... with an entire evening of wasted time ahead of me, I spent about six hours on this.Summary: This tutorial will teach you what color environment is and how to manipulate it in your work. The tutorial covers why balance is important to a piece and how to integrate colors in a piece. It also covers the basics of color temperature and how to apply it to a piece.
I'm very exhausted. I think I'll go eat something now. I aplogize for the size of this tutorial, both in height and file size. since this is a tutorial with an emphasis on COLOR, I had to keep the quality as large as I could. I also would like to apologize to *jennadelle for using her photo of a glowstick. it's a good photo. did I mention I'm tired.
what's really funny about this tutorial is that I took a class in college last semester on color theory. didn't learn jack from it, except that I loathed oil paint. everything in this tutorial I've learned from an article I read sometime in high school (I think as a sophomore or junior) on color temperature, and from studying *balaa 's art (I don't know why, but way back when she was primarily at TLKFAA, the way she unified color in her pictures was like a divine revelation... this girl is god of color environment, and she's really successful because of it). this tutorial is really in response to all the idiots out there who have ever made a "how to color in Photoshop!!11/" tutorial, and told people to shade with black and highlight with white, or use the dodge and burn tools. to all those people: I hate you. please die.
Further Reading:
Color Temperature - This is a very technical article about color temperature, or "white balance", mostly geared towards photographers. but it has those nifty graphs.
Punchstock - Source of all the photos... stock photo websites are nice if you want to portray a certain environment, and aren't sure how it might look like in reality. references are your friend.
Color Theory - Your Wiki rundown on color theory. Rejoice, rejoice.

This is amazing. Color has always been my weak points and the problems I always seemed to have with the tutorials is that I don't want to draw their paintings, I want to understand why they make the choices they make. I've always had a need to fully understand something before I could uh...I don't know...USE IT IN MY WORK?! But I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to explain at least this much, because I've always worked in b/w. I had NOOOOOOOO idea what I was doing when it came to color.
By the way, how did you like KH2? It rocked your socks, didn't it? Huh? Huh? I know it rocked mine. Rather tenderly.

I have yet to complete the journal. All I have left to do is complete the alternate Hades cup. which is impressive if you consider just how much shit you have to do to complete the journal. DD:

It's been a while since I first read this and I have to say that it really helped me a lot. Before this the concept of doing shadows/lights according the backgrounds was something new for me.
It's easy to follow up and the images really give you an idea of how it should turn out. Thanks a lot for taking the time on doing this.

I've been looking for a tutorial just like this for sometime now, and this is amazing -- it's very well thought-out and written, and I especially liked how you went over more of the theory than writing-up a step-by-step tutorial. It certainly leaves it more open for the material to be applied to a greater variety of artwork. Major kudos.

This is SO incredibly helpful. I am just enjoying perusing it SO much. There's so much to learn about light and color that it's overwhelming sometimes... especially when you're trying to do things from your head.
Whatever the case, thank you very much for this excellent tutorial, which I will be using this very day!

As a traditional artist, I get exasperated wtih the overwhelming number of digital-art-specific tutorials, and, upon finding this, I fell upon my knees and thanked the powers that be for a tutorial that not only I, but anyone who uses color, no matter the medium, can use! You are now a goddess. Officially. *nods sagely*

Wonderful job on this!! You compacted all the info on color environment so well! ^__^.
And I agree with you 100006490785097549087% on the people who use the light and dark tool. Every day, another 100 people are sucked into its seemingly easy ways....unknowing of the danger of the GRAYING of the colors UGGGGHHhh SICKeningANDgross. It's like the grass tool--a disease! Thank god that I stopped using it after just a few pics....about 3 years ago XD.

This is beautiful in concept, and in execution. There are some things I've heard before, but much more that I haven't or haven't had explained as well. Like most I have to thank you for taking the time to put together this. The explanations were to the point, and the examples, even though simple, helped get the topics across wonderfully. Altogether this not only demonstrates your knowledge of the topic, but in a helpful way for others just begin to explore the topic of color theory.

I love how useful all your tutorials are I'm sick of seeing thousands of 'this is how I color' or 'this is how you do lineart in this program' tutorials, not that they're bad, but they all get boring and very similar after awhile. Your tutorials, on the other hand, are
1. unique (this is normally the kind of useful stuff you would pull out of an art class, not a quick tutorial)
2. helpful (I actually learn from these)
3. applicable in many different situations (as compared to a tutorial that shows you how to do lineart a certain way in a certain program...these kinds of tutorials, on the other hand, can be applied to almost any medium)
4. easy to understand (thank you for realizing grammar can not randomly go to heck on a tutorial, and explaining everything thoroughly)
I guess I'm just saying your tutorials rock and I'd refer any artist (beginner-advanced) to them for pointers
