Description
In 1946, a communist revolt began in French Indochina after a period of in wich the French rule had grown more and more repressive. The Viet Minh under Ho Chi Minh fought against the French aswell as cooperating Vietnamese forces under the puppet emperor Bao Dai for several months, when the League of Nations decided to directly intervene in the war on France's behalf. The CommIntern was asked for help by the Viet Minh, but they were still supporting the communists in China under Mao Zedong who in winning a civil war, aswell as winning over Korea from Japanese colonial rule and were thus not able to assist apart from material and propagandistic aid. Japan had refused League assistance in Korea, so it's forces were able to freely intervene in Vietnam. After two years of fighting, Bao Dai stepped down from the throne, and the French officialy ended colonial rule, both under pressure from the Leauge of Nations. A new pro-western government under Ngo Dinh Diem could therefor claim legitimacy and was able to rally substantial public support against the Viet Minh, who were defeated one year later. Remaining communists fled to China, Ho Chi Minh among them.Ngo Dinh Diem established a tight Boulangerist rule over the now united country he named the State of Vietnam.

What is it with people thinking that because monarchy XXX did something bad, every other monarchy in that state will too?
Like, imagine if people treated republics the same way o_O
"Republic? You mean the one that forced us to live in a totalitarian quasi-communist state for fifty years? No thank you! Czech please!"
(And yes, I did just paraphrase you INCLUDING a bad pun :3 )

I actualy laughed at that
And it's because a monarchy is charachterized by the rule of one family. A republic is not. If in a republic on leader of state does something bad you can usualy just get rid of him and his policies seize. In a monarchy that is not all that easy. The children of monarchs are educated in family values, they are not controllable by the people and, in the case of Vietnam, neither did the people want to be ruled by Bao Dai nor wanted Bao Dai to rule. He spent almost all his time in France and abdicated voluntarily. Why bring that stuff back? At least Ho and his communists fought the Imperialists instead of allying with them to safe the rule of their glorious monarchy ...

Oh really? It just so happens that the communist regieme was charecterized by the rule of one party
Or if you take the US. The rule of two parties.
So if you can replace a party/givernment, why not replace the royal family? It was a pretty common occurance before the rise of *gags* nationalism.
I find that a lot of things people think are "impossible" or "not that easy" are actually quite easy to do, it's just all in their heads.
For a very simple reason. Replace nationalism with the loyalty to a monarch ^_^ Personally I think that it wouldn't be all that difficult to change "by the will of god" to "by the will of the people".

Okay. But now you have positioned yourself in a self-built predicament. If the monarch serves as nothing more than a projection of loyalty ... then why are you against the rule of a communist party with cult of personality? Why now replace the general secretary with a monarch? They basicaly serve the same purpose. (that's why I'm not realy a fan of authoritarian socialism, but hey, for argument's sake
)

Never said I was That's you putting words in my mouth. Personally I don't see any sort of predicament, you see it because you make assumptions
Firstly, yes I am looking for an alternative to nationalism and I see it in a monarchy. However comparing a monarchy (we're talking an enlightened, social monarchy, not Saudi Arabia-style absolute monarchy) to a dictatorial, opressive regieme (we're talking the Czechoslovak Soviet-oriented regieme) isn't exactly accurate. As you see, both are on the completely oposite sides of the spectrum even though both employ the "loyalty to XXX person" system.
Secondly, theoretically I'd have no problem with a leader-style state, were it to be prosperous and if it took care of the people while replacing nationalism. Personally I'd prefer a monarchy due to the long tradition backing it up (history, crown jewels, ceremonies, buildings, etc.) but that's a personal preference. However "personality cult" and "leader" have a bad taste in Europe.
