You learnt how to do this from some ancient, hyper intelligent life form didn't you?
I have not seen anything as awesome as this for a while now. No, seriously!

Thanks so much, this is my favorite book from the series as well, it's cast from real fossils, my favorite kind. I love this kind of painting, all the aging and rust and patinas... so fun to paint

OMG I have two real fossils as well so I can understand! Mine are from the Himalayas, and they're actually sea shell fossils! (Can you beat that?? My aunt, who works in the army that's on the border explained that it proves that India was once an island which smashed into the Asian landmass )
And omg I would give anything for your creativity XD

TimBakerFX In reply to Calyptra [2009-11-07 22:26:22 +0000 UTC]
oh yeah, the crash between them drove up the Himalayas... I saw a great animation of the movements of the plates over the years from Pangea to now... so interesting.
hehe, I think creativity can be built like any muscle, just takes practice and desire, you can do it

They're both excellent languages in their own respect! Chinese characters are beautiful and logical - not just random drawings. I enjoy character practice a lot, haha

I just have to inquire further into the method behind making this.
I completely understand the fossil bits - I do a lot of resin casting for my tabletop gaming hobby, so I get what you did as far as casting the ammolites en masse like that. What I'm a wee bit baffled by is the actual 'metal' bits that are encasing the fossils.
A few questions, then:
Is the metal actually, well, metal? Or some other material sculpted overtop, and then painted to resemble metal? I can't imagine working metal into such shapes and still having it rest flush against the ammolite shells, where there's no gap between the metal and the shells. If I were to try and do this, I imagine I'd simply make a 'sheet' of shell-fossils, then sculpt the metal bits overtop in sculpey or something, and cast the whole cover as one solid piece afterwards, but I'm not sure if this is how you approached it
If it -is- actually metal, how on earth do you work it in such a fashion?
If not, what do you use to sculpt as far as medium?
Thanks in advance, I'm just intensely curious as I'd like to make something similar for my fiance.

TimBakerFX In reply to jamsessionein [2009-10-19 04:27:07 +0000 UTC]
well, I cast a few fossils, then make a bunch of them in different sizes... laid them out in a sheet and used plaster and dirt to form fill in. I made s silicone mold of that, cut it into an 8.5 X 11 inch sheet, then cast a clean one in silicone. Then I sculpted the "metal" parts and molded it again. Everything is paint layers. I use metal paints that have real metal in them so I can patina them with chemicals to make it look very real. Hope that helps

I have two perfect fossil Ammonites, I cast them many times, then carved them down to diffrent size fossils. Then I made one master mold of all of them togeather plastered togeather. The painting was very fun, matching the original colors as best I could

I cast real fossils and cast these out of resin. They are just painted to look like rock
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
CorazondeDios In reply to TimBakerFX [2009-01-01 12:09:40 +0000 UTC]
resin? does it harden like epoxy? this sounds like a VERY fun process. I do fossil hunting sometimes in the Hill Country and around Dallas. There are ammonites galore, and shark teeth and other cool stuff. This has real possibilities.
Plus, I can make stuff out of clay or plaster as a mold.
hmmmmmm.
