Thank you so much

You go right ahead, i've just started with metals the last few years, it's been quite the learning experience. If I can help with any information or processes, just let me know, best of luck

This is amazing. Fossils are so cool.
How did you make it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to FROdominatrix [2008-09-06 04:57:26 +0000 UTC]

thanks, I have two (prized) ammolite fossils, i made a mold of them, then cast lots and cut them down to different sizes. I set them out and used plaster and sand in between. I then made a mold of that and cast it in resin so I could sculpt the brass pointy bits. the book binding is pretty standard, then a little hinge work and painting and aging.

I have no idea where you get your ideas but they are really inspired, I have always loved fossils so this is probably my favorite amongst the books but its a hard call I have a few ammonite fossils in stone I have been wanting to make one into a necklace though the design hasn't come to me. It makes me feel inspired.

TimBakerFX In reply to solusauroraborealis [2008-08-26 05:39:42 +0000 UTC]

thanks the fossil book is my favorite too, i just love those ammonites. I have two and just cast them several times. I carved the plaster casts down to make a bunch of different sizes to make the book cover.

make sure you post when you make your necklace

solusauroraborealis In reply to TimBakerFX [2008-09-01 05:54:24 +0000 UTC]

yeah most likely, I am a rock/fossil hoarder. For awhile I used to walk the beaches of Lake Superior when I lived up north and have a way of eying out fossilized corals and sponges, just like I can with agates.
It would be cool to see nested books kinda like this, I love the pure imagery it automatically provokes as a piece.

I think its a matter of knowing what to look for. Some people find money, I find rocks XD

This one's stunning as well. I've seen a comment where you asked someone if they thought people would buy those as notebooks. I gotta say, yes, definitely. Although most probably wouldn't be able to afford your works, there would be some who would spare no expense.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to eyeroll [2008-08-27 16:19:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah, it's the being able to afford them thing... the time involved can be really high... 100's of hours on some, but i might be able to work something out

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eyeroll In reply to TimBakerFX [2008-08-27 16:48:34 +0000 UTC]

100 hours?! Dude, that's crazy But one can tell a lot of time is spent on making such beautiful works and paying a lot would be worth it.

avesome ;D

how much it weights? (hyhyhy strange question)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to farmerownia [2008-08-06 06:49:02 +0000 UTC]

it's not real rock or bronze, but resin and paint... but even so, it's a thick book and has thick covers so it's pretty heavy. Thanks

PirateLotus-Stock In reply to ??? [2008-08-03 16:20:24 +0000 UTC]

This is so beautiful! The detail is amazing!! I love the different textures, and how they look together. And I love how the book looks so sturdy, and then there are these delicate-looking fossils in the middle.

How much does it weigh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to PirateLotus-Stock [2008-08-16 03:56:52 +0000 UTC]

I love Ammonite Fossils, they were always my favorite. Specially when they come in those big rocky clumps. I used silicone to mold the fossils to get all the detail and cast them in resin. It's not as heavy as the rock would be but it's still pretty hefty

thanks! glad you like it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PirateLotus-Stock In reply to TimBakerFX [2008-08-20 05:43:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it looks like you took a chunk of rock with all the fossils in it and made it into a book. I love how there are so many of them all together ^.^

GoaliGrlTilDeath [2008-07-30 21:48:04 +0000 UTC]

I like how tactile this is- it really makes me want to touch it! Are those real fossils or are they casts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to GoaliGrlTilDeath [2008-07-30 21:53:16 +0000 UTC]

I cast the two real ones I have, and then carved them down to different sizes. oh yeah i'm with you, sculpture is meant to be touched!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GoaliGrlTilDeath In reply to TimBakerFX [2008-07-30 22:56:55 +0000 UTC]

Too bad the folks at the fancy-smancy art museums don't see things our way

Thats the best part about sculpture... getting your hands IN it. Nothing else gives you that (or at least safely).

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Vivienne-Mercier In reply to GoaliGrlTilDeath [2008-07-31 04:41:14 +0000 UTC]

What's really dumb is when they have those kinetic sculptures that are precisely balanced so when they're lightly touched, they move in awesome ways...and there are signs saying DON'T TOUCH! What the hell? It's supposed to be touched, that's the whole point!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PirateLotus-Stock In reply to Vivienne-Mercier [2008-08-03 16:09:59 +0000 UTC]

If you ever go to a museum and you see a Carl Andre metal "rug" you can walk on them. You're supposed to, and the guards should know it's ok. They have one at the Nelson-Atkins in KC, and I was really excited to see it. Walked all over it, hehe

SauriaMami In reply to PirateLotus-Stock [2008-09-10 05:21:02 +0000 UTC]

been on that one myself...and it was great! Nelson-Atkins gets some great shows sometimes
