i guess...in request to their last moments, spike asked celestia to have luna change them into stars so that they will always be together...T.T so sad...dragons can live longer than ponies, but i don't know how long, since i'm not that fully into the canons and headcanons yet, but like alicorns, dragons are very majestic creatures and could live for centuries...and spike, reaching the end of his life, asked celestia and luna to be able to be with rarity for many more years to come...that's what i guess...

I wondered that too. Transport them to the place where all good souls come to rest? Grant them peaceful dreams for the eternal slumber that awaited them? Memorialize/immortalize them together for ever in an effigy made of gold and jewels? We shall never know. Certainly, their spirits have been set free from their mortal bonds as evidenced by the smaller purple and larger green shooting stars in the last panel. Every soul memorialized, given a place to shine eternal in her night sky, perhaps?

She is the bringer of the moon, the painter of the night sky; and she is the keeper of dreams, the eternal guardian of the realm slumber.
