well, beings as the entire point of him calling the princesses over is because he was tired of living and wanted to die. why would he want to be turned to stone?

the only reason they put rarity in that state is because spike didn't want to die alone which he appears to feel a bit guilty about since it was, while understandable, an extremely selfish move on his part.

Of all the comics that ever ended on Equestria Daily, this is probably one of my least favorites. The story is a mess filled with ideas constructed solely for the emotional impact that defy all logic.
Let's start with the concept in general, main theme is passage of time, a plot that has been recycled in fan work since the inception of bronies and many have been done much better. This one at least tries something original by turning it into a bittersweet ending, but it's just way too silly and can't be taken seriously.
The whole idea is really nonsensical and many rules were bent to create Β this impact. Sure, Rarity was petrified by Celestia(despite it being a really dumb idea), which she proved she could do multiple times; the only problem is that the statue was young while the body was old. If you were to look at Discords statue transformation, you'd see that he was frozen in time, looked exactly like his final pose.
The line she says to spike, "I'm afraid I must have lost all my looks", is downright illogical. On her so called deathbed, she was as old as when she was frozen in stone.
On the side note, had that panel been removed, it would've made more sense, but would also make the story a bit darker and more disturbing. It would hint that Rarity wasn't frozen in time, just trapped inside a stone prison while young and unable to die. She would keep aging and her body would be decomposing until freed.
Despite my hatred towards the Spike/Rarity shipping in fan art, that wouldn't bias me to hate this comic if it was done right. Unfortunately, the whole love aspect has been too forced for it's own good. The "Up" like ending would've made the comic much better and more mature, showing how true love lasted for eternity and him dying alone holding onto a statue with Luna giving him his final dream, an illusion that he got to see Rarity one last time. Even if he just died and two falling stars were shown would've made a much bigger impact. Of so many possibilities, the "Let's freeze my wife so that we can die together" comes out as a half-assed story that tries to fish out as many "d'awwww" reactions from its readers as possible; making the whole comic feel like some sort of a manipulation.
On a more positive note, the art style is pretty good, tries to capture the spirit of the show while maintaining some original design choices and it does so quite successfully. The only issue is Spike's unibrow after he gets old. It's not much, but it makes an already silly story even less possible to take seriously.
In conclusion, this story has the misfortune of being nothing more than an overrated mess with a decent art style.

That said, I really like the way you depicted old Spike (and Rarity). 
So, Luna is the one who performs the final duties? Well, according to Neil Gaiman Dream is the younger brother of Death.

When one is a Princess, one has duties; not necessarily pleasant ones but duties to which you are bound and that you must see done well, especially for your friends. Celestia and Luna had reason to recall this here, I think.

Still, to anyone who enjoys the subject of Spike growing up but doesn't want to see thins 'end of life' type story, I highly recommend the fic 'It Takes a Village'

In it Spike is growing up into a full sized dragon, but the story is about how that complicates things around town and how his friends help him handle that. It's a 'near future' rather than a 'distant future' fic and well worth reading.
