Description
This is one of my Grad presents. I like her. what say ye, internet? This girl is so ALIVE, and she has laid her roots down, deep into the community and I think forcing her out of this place just might destroy her. . .She is just like a tree. She digs herself deep into her surroundings, be it family, friends or activities and they BECOME part of her. She grows out from them.

Fantastic composition! I love the different styles you've used on it, especially the varied colors in the sky. They remind me of Cezanne, Van Gogh, or Monet.

Thank you so much! I can't say any of those artists were direct inspirations here, but I do love post-impressionism; I would be surprised if none of that influence appeared at some point in what I do

Really love the cross hatching and texture of the tree. The angular tips of the branches are like fingers gingerly reaching out to something. At once, they look menacing but then upon closer inspection, they remind me of some of the character fingers in drawings by Dr. Seuss. For example, look at how this one character is holding a key: [link] The branches of this tree are blindly reaching into space to grasp at something small and delicate.
Interesting... also, my first impression of the white branches on the lower part of the painting was that they are roots... but, it may be also viewed as an inverted shadow, the branches of which are softer and do not reflect directly what is present above ground.

I like the concept. I like the crosshatching in the bark

Thanks! I wasn't totally sure of it in a few spots, but it works pretty good as a whole, I thought

Looks better than my attempts at crosshatching!

I love working with crosshatching. It's one of the few kinds of shading I'm any good at. hatching, I can't get the lines right; stippling I just can't get right.
With crosshatching, you can screw it up and no one can tell because it's a complicated sort of shading. one line does NOT lead into the next. WOOT!

crosshatching is something I've always struggled with - it never quite looked right to me.

crosshatching is weird in that it either looks perfect or it looks terrible. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. this actually was supposed to be hatching, but then the shading didn't look quite right, and it just kind of turned into crosshatching. I think that actually is the best way to do crosshatching. accidentally
