#380: Latias
The Eon Pokemon
Dragon/Psychic (Regular/Mega) (Legendary)

Height: 4.5-5 ft tall (Regular)
           5.5-6ft tall (Mega)

Length: 7.5-8 ft long (Regular)
           9.5-10 ft long (Mega)

Weight: 85-90 lbs (Regular)
           110-115 lbs (Mega)

Sound: Occasionally, Latias normally make high-pitched calls, almost sounding like something both avian and reptilian at the same time. A high-pitched, sometimes musical call, but with a slight reverberating hiss to it. And when they're encountering real danger, then that song turns into a horrendously loud shriek.

But why listen out for THAT? After all, in the event that you encounter a Latias, it's more likely going to communicate with you by either telepathy, or straight up talking to you in a human language. In fact, at any given time, assume wild Latios and Latias DON'T communicate to each other with any vocal noise, and that they constantly use telepathy to get messages out to each other.

Gender: 100% female. The subject on their ability to procreate and maintain a stable population is a...VERY complicated matter. Please read ahead to know exactly what I'm talking about.

Location: Heh, good luck.

There have been sightings in the past on Hoenn's Southern Island, but the mist veil surrounding it makes it impossible to even get in there! At least without your trusty Flying Pokemon mysteriously fainting in mid-air and dropping into the ocean a mile away from land. Trust me, you don't wanna do that.

Latias have also been seen on occasions roaming Hoenn and Kanto! Although this section is going to remain very sparse, because you can't count on getting results by actively seeking a Latias! If they don't wanna be found by you, they won't. You could search for a hundred years, and they'll evade you every time.

They're Legendary Pokemon, so of course this isn't going to be easy. If anything, don't come to them. They'll come to you (more likely if you happened to find a Latiasite). And if they ever do, then bless you and your amazing luck.

( A ) General: Ah, the Eon Twins...two species of Dragon-Type Pokemon that are powerful enough to be considered Legendary Pokemon. But the truth is that they're both some of the hardest Pokemon in the world to study! Their rarity in the wild. Their ability to make themselves invisible. Their extremely fast flight that makes sights of them very fast and fleeting. Their aptitude at keeping away from the eyes of people who probably have no business seeing them. For all their beauty and rarity, scientists have been reluctant to study them, knowing how much of a goose chase it really is trying to find them.

However...I think I may have found some answers. I cannot say from where, when, or how. But as I've searched the world for the truth about Pokemon, it was nearly inevitable that I stumbled across information on these otherwise untraceable Pokemon. And lemme tell you, it's quite a lot! I think you'll learn a lot from reading this report!

( B ) Prehistory: The body shape and skeleton of Latias and Latios alike are a class of their own nowadays, but their genes, and hexapodal body structure suggests that they may have once been relatives of dragon-like Pokemon like Salamence, Dragonite and Charizard. Of course, being Dragon-Type Pokemon, this is anything but accidental, although their ancestry goes back for millions of years!

If we look further back, we can see that Dragons first became prominent in the first place during the Eocene Epoch. Ironically, this was all right after the K-T Extinction, which had extinguished the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, along with large Pokemon like Tyrantrum, Bastiodon, Rampardos and Aurorus. While the Dragon-Type Pokemon that had survived the K-T Extinction were actually very small, so to compensate for the lack of large food after the extinction event, they grew larger as their prey evolved into new forms. Larger birds and larger mammals, along with a lack of giant reptiles, gave these Dragon-like Pokemon a new niche to fill! Large, aerial predators that could hunt fast and strong, but only so long as they could fuel themselves efficiently. However given time, the fluctuation in environmental changes, ESPECIALLY global cooling, allowed mammals and birds to thrive, but large reptiles to have an increasingly difficult time surviving. What's more, is that this effect was most prominent in the Ice Age of the Pleistocene Epoch, whose increasingly cooler temperatures had lowered the population of Dragon-Type Pokemon so much, their numbers are still recovering even today.

However, as they diverged, things worked out differently for Latios and Latias as a species. They grew features that were noticeably more bird-like. Evolution had given them proto-feathers of sorts, that almost resembles a furry down that kept them warm; a mouth with a blunt snout and teeth that allowed them to sustain themselves on an omnivorous diet. Nervous adornments, giving them psychic power for flight, the ability to evade predators with empathetic sensing, and the ability to further perfect their skills at Illusory Refraction. A generally warm-blooded metabolism, and lastly the same longevity that other Dragon-like Pokemon tend to have at their luxury. These physical changes they adapted allowed them to adapt well to changes in weather, and exist well past the Ice Age with intact numbers. In fact, there had once been a time when they were MORE populous than the average Salamence or Dragonite, because their numbers were not affected by the Ice Age, and they could fit nicely to a variety of niches without worrying about shortage of provisions!

Modern History: Sad to say, this was about the same time when Latios and Latias stopped being able to effectively reproduce with each other, making their numbers grow stagnant. This was also around the same time that their numbers dropped drastically, thanks to natural disasters caused by Groudon and Kyogre (See Topic E for more details). However, as they looked to humans to help get their numbers back up, this was about the same time when Latios and Latias had begun to have a part in human civilization. When they weren't flying under the radar, masquerading as normal humans, they took a role as guardians of human towns.

This was especially true in a Hoenn town called Alto Mare. This was a place that had a long-standing tradition of honoring the several generations of Latios and Latias that guarded this town. Each two new Latios and Latias chosen to be the guardians are trained by a Rayquaza (excepting the last two, who were trained by a Lugia instead), and anointed as the protectors of Alto Mare, and all who live there. If some Latios or Latias die on the job, their spirits live on inside of an item known as the Soul Dew. An orb containing the spiritual energy of a single Latios/Latias, and used to power and operate the Alto Mare Defense Mechanism that protects the city (or can potentially destroy it, if used in the wrong hands).

The only instance that we know of regarding said island was the Alto Mare incident, where two Team Rocket grunts named Annie and Oakley had infiltrated the city, and made an attempt to take control of it by assuming control of the Alto Mare Defense Mechanism, by first getting the Soul Dew. However, they pretty much went mad with power they weren't supposed to have, and damn near drowned the entire city. The only reason this city survived is because of the efforts of a group of young trainers, and the Latias and Latios guarding the city. Sadly, the Latios perished in his efforts to try and save the city, while his sister lived on to guard Alto Mare.

...or so you'd think. This story actually took a couple of wildly unexpected turns, and you'll find out more in my Personal Experiences Segment. Team Rocket can't do any harm anymore, so I think it's time we let this whole thing go live. Just to at least let you guys know what happened next.

( C ) Anatomy and Powers: First of all, let's go over the basics. They are hexapodal, meaning they have six limbs total. Their arms are only useful for grabbing things, in which case they're content to tuck them into their bodies to decrease air resistance. Their legs are near-totally atrophied, as a result of constantly levitating, so they are seen covered in feathers. Their faces are short-snouted, and they have teeth which allows them to eat meat and vegetation alike. Their nervous system is highly developed and ornate, even among Psychic-Type Pokemon. However, this leads to them having a low tolerance for taking damage, which equates to their 90 Defense stat. They compensate for this by cycling invisible psychic energies below them while they levitate, which muffles the impact of ranged Special Attacks, giving Latias a naturally high Special Defense. NOW....how about something really interesting?

Energy Sac: Their body is round and they have a bit of a pot-belly, because they have an "Energy Sac". Internal chemical reactions within their stomach burn large amounts of food energy and convert it into what I call "Draconic Energy". A fire-like energy which ionizes atoms in the air, and is contained within this Energy Organ, much like Fire-Type Pokemon contain combustible gas and chemicals within a Flame Sac. On its own, their Draconic Energy production is highly potent, allowing them to do a number of Dragon-Type moves with it. Such as:
- Dragon Breath (Breathes the energy in a stream, whose ionizing effect may paralyze a body's nervous system.)
- Dragon Pulse (Produces a ball of energy and pops it, the resulting burst dealing damage with no other effect.)
- Dragon Claw (Wreathes their claws in Draconic Energy, deals damage with no other effect.)
- Draco Meteor (Breathes a large clump of Draconic Energy that explodes in mid-air, raining down as smaller "meteors" but tiring out the user considerably.)
- Outrage (Wreathes their entire body in Draconic Energy and rampages about, but they are confused afterwards, because of overexertion and their nervous system being scrambled by their own Draconic Energy.)

However, as a Psychic-Type Pokemon, Latias are very capable of using their psychic power to manipulate their Draconic Energy on an atomic level, converting it into many other types of energy that can be used for moves. Moves that include:
- Thunderbolt (Converts the energy into pure electricity)
- Shadow Ball (Converts the energy into an electromagnetic ectoplasm which disrupts the neural signals inside a nervous system)
- Energy Ball (Converts the energy into a ball of particles rather like photons, which is equivalent to throwing a ball of sunlight)
- Ice Beam (Converts the energy into a ball which sucks away thermal energy, forming a mass of freezing air which is blasted as a beam, while the ball is sucked back into the body)
- Hyper Beam (Converts the energy into an unstable clump of random energies, which is fired all at once, exhausting the Latias enough to need a cooldown period).

Nervous Adornments: Their entire nervous systems are also abundant with nerve adornments characteristic of Psychic-Type Pokemon. Growths on the nervous system which allow a Pokemon to produce special nervous signals from their brains and body, and project them outside of their bodies as psychokinetic energy, which can manipulate physical objects on a subatomic level. In the case of Latias, they seem to use their psychic abilities to help support other Pokemon, as well as deal damage. This results in moves like:
- Healing Wish (Uses psychic power to boost their ally's body systems, and assist their immune system in purging unwanted conditions)
- Psywave (Launches a wave of psychic power that grows each time a Pokemon grows stronger by leveling up)
- Stored Power (Gradually builds up as a Pokemon's physical fitness and strengths are increased, which stimulates their nervous system into giving this move greater power.)
- Heal Pulse (Uses a burst of psychic power that soothes a target's nervous system, giving relief to physical injuries, and speeding up immune system's ability to heal.)
- Psycho Shift (Uses psychic power to fool their opponent's body into "thinking" it has a status condition, when nothing is actually affecting it, while simultaneously suppressing their body's reaction to a harmful status.)
- Zen Headbutt (Emits an aura of psychic power from their heads, which scrambles any nervous system that it hits upon impact.)
- Guard Split (Uses its psychic power to sync itself with its opponent's nervous system, and adjust both of their sensitivities to pain from Physical or Special damage.)
- Psychic (Hits their opponent with a condensed wave of telekinetic force, that may leave the nervous system increasingly vulnerable to pain from Special Attacks.)

As a bonus to all of this, they have an ability they call "Sight Sharing". When they've been around another being for an extended period of time, and have synchronized their immune systems frequently enough to familiarize themselves with another person's senses, they can use Sight Sharing to remotely see exactly what their "target" is seeing. This works best between Latios and Latias, who use this ability to keep tabs on one another's current whereabouts and activity.

Internal Bio-Ramjets: Their wings are unique among Dragon-Type Pokemon, because their wings do indeed contain flesh and bone. However, their wings are a fair bit more muscular and dense, while also having a structure that shouldn't be able to fly on its own. Their wings are rigid, and cannot be bent, nor can they flap. Instead, their wings have small cavities up at the front where they intake air. The inside of their wings also contain various "veins" where Draconic Energy from their Energy Sacs is transferred, acting as a kind of fuel injected into their wings. When this energy is injected into their wings, it combusts the air, expelling it behind them as a jet of air. This is much the same method that planes with ramjet engines use to fly.

With their aerodynamic bodies and down feathers which immunize them from friction damage, they can use this method of flight to cruise in at an average speed of 650 mph, and a top speed of 840 mph.

However....when in a closed space, such as a battlefield, they use their Bio-Ramjets to hover instead of fly, while also needing aid from their psychic power to allow them to stay in one general area. This reduces their speed in battle to a "mere" 110 mph.

(NOTE: Being Psychic-Type Pokemon, they are able to sustain high speed flight without being blinded or taking friction damage to their faces by using a sort of "Concorde Mask". That is, they project an invisible barrier of psychic energy in front of their faces to safeguard themselves against air friction.)

Refractory Down: Here's something interesting to try on for size. People beg the question, how does Latias turn invisible? Sit down, cuz this might be a bit of a long physics lesson.

You see, when they are layered together on the Latias' body, its feathers look red and white and feel like silk, but up closer you'll notice that they're merely reflecting certain types of light, and the feathers individually are actually clear and reflective, like actual glass. What's more is that microscopic examination reveals that they are made of a sort of naturally occurring optical metamaterial, composed of a sort of lattice-like network, of identical elements. The spacing between these elements is less than the wavelength of visible light.

What this equates to is giving Latias a skill we call Illusory Refracting: the ability to control light hitting it on an electromagnetic level, which is something even we cannot accomplish in lab-testing, and certainly something that usually doesn't occur in nature. Most natural objects can only interact with light on an electrical level, either refracting it or reflecting it. But Latias can effectively use its feathers and own psychokinetic energy to bend light all around its body and pass through the other side, making it almost entirely invisible, or reflect light all around itself certain ways that allow it to perfectly masquerade as a human being. Since this works on multiple levels of the visible light spectrum, many Pokemon can't see them, and they are almost totally invisible to us. However, computers and surveillance systems that can detect energy waves not on the visible light spcetrum can see Latias just fine, albeit surrounded by a cloud of electromagnetic energy.

(NOTE: This is not the same as Zoroark's Illusion, or Ditto's Transform. Zoroark can use a kind of "psychic" power to fool other people's senses into sensing something that is false. Ditto can restructure its DNA and anatomy entirely into something different. Latias can bend and reflect light in such a way that makes it LOOK like something that's there, or not there at all. Latias doesn't actually transform into a human, but merely look like a human to human eyes.)

( D ) Telepathic Empathy: Being a Psychic-Type Pokemon, a vital part of the disposition of any Latias is their sensitivity to the thoughts and emotions of those around it. ESPECIALLY when dealing with humans and attempting to integrate into their society for whatever reasons they may have.

It must be noted that the telepathy a Latias has goes both ways. It is both able to project its thoughts, specifically into coherent speech for one person/a group of people to hear. Not that they aren't perfectly capable of learning human speech, but they seem to find telepathy as a more intimate, truthful way of expressing one's thoughts. Or alternatively, they can also read people's minds and know what's going on through their heads. They're surprisingly patient at sorting out coherent thoughts from background white noise, and actually learning something from it, considering how unorganized our inner thoughts per minute really are. Alongside thoughts, which they need to do some very calculated sorting and cherry-picking, they seem to almost automatically pick up on the feelings of others, without even trying.

This is a sort of evolutionary advantage they have, which has allowed them to fly under the radar of other, more powerful predators during its evolution into what it is today. If it senses hostility, predatory hunger, or hormonal imbalances in an aggressive Pokemon, it will simply disappear, and ensure that it never has to suffer the brunt of any wild Pokemon's aggression. Same goes for people. If it senses something particularly nasty in a person, such as murderousness, greed, uncontrollable rage, or any other indication that it should absolutely stay away from someone, then it won't be seen at all. Using this, Latios and Latias have been able to stay well away from the prying eyes of evil organizations looking to exploit powerful Pokemon for their own insane needs. This had also allowed them to keep away from trainers they know would be abusive, or people who would act very irrational around it.

( E ) Behavior and Disposition: For all intents and purposes, they are more human-like than we give them credit for. They have very close ties with whose whom they consider friends and family, perhaps as a way of acknowledging their tendency to herd in the wild. Because of their tendency to avoid predators rather than confront them, and their inherent power, wild Latias are quite peaceful, knowing they usually have no need to exert their power. They form especially close bonds with people, on account of them being telepathic, and are usually willing to open themselves up to others, on the condition that others do the same for it. Knowing how casually they can use their powers, they can also turn out to be quite playful and mischievous!

Despite all that, none of it means that Latias isn't afraid to fight for others and itself if needed. If it ever finds itself cornered, or its friends in serious trouble, one can count on Latias becoming aggressive. Very much so. In which case, they'll either battle you, or god forbid, they screech at you. This screech is actually a sort of Brown-Note effect (aka a sensory input that is inherently harmful to whatever senses it), which causes your body to become paralyzed against its will. When it does this, then you can count on having NO defense against this very much angered Pokemon.

(NOTE: Evil organizations who attempted to capture a Latias have learned this, and prepare for it ahead of time, to avoid their capture attempts at ending so soon by hearing its voice.

However, this is something that Latias in human civilizations almost never do unless absolutely necessary. The biggest reason for this being that if they disguise themselves and live within human settlements, their cover will immediately be blown upon using their "Fear Cry", which prompts them to try to figure out other ways to escape a bad situation.)

On the other hand, if it decides to be someone's Pokemon, then it will pour in its best efforts to pushing you, as a trainer, towards your dreams and aspirations. Other than that, when you encounter a Latias, expect to treat it more as an equal human being, because that's essentially what it acts like!

( F ) Gender and Reproduction: Did you know that Latios and Latias can't reproduce?

Well...technically, they SHOULD be able to reproduce, and they once were able to rear offspring, but now can only do so by artificial insemination. And even then, it's an unpleasant affair for the mother. Because you see...Latios and Latias are rare today, because of birth complications. As they evolved, they reproduced extremely infrequently, but their babies grew up fast enough to replenish adult populations. Fast growth was a preferred trait in sexual selection. But this had caused severe complications, as eventually, Latias eggs began growing bigger each generation. This all causes birth complications due to too large eggs (about the size of a 20-lb propane tank), and birth canals that aren't big enough for it. This is actually the exact same sad phenomena that claims the lives of so many Marowak rearing offspring.

For a long time, as in thousands of years at a time, they didn't need to procreate, because they held a respectable population for many thousands of years. Each member reproducing very slowly and infrequently, but also living for very long periods of time. Their great power also helping them along in their survival. But their population dropped immensely after disaster struck long ago, thanks to Groudon and Kyogre. Something that had caused many populations in the region to die off, including many Latios and Latias who couldn't resist the new changes in weather. That in itself had caused their numbers to drop. But their numbers became even lower, as birth complications alone had caused mortality rates of mothers and newborn babies to go up. And even lower still, as pregnant Latias can't muster enough energy to maintain a disguise, which makes them easy pickings for predators strong enough to face them. And they remained rare ever since because of their surprisingly limited ability to resupply their own numbers. Unlike Absol, they didn't have any discernible Egg Groups to aid them either, meaning that couplings with other Pokemon would be most likely to turn out unsuccessful.

However...one of the few known species they CAN reproduce with are, paradoxically enough...human beings. Their reproductive organs and chromosomes are strikingly alike to that of humans, and can have a child with them. In fact, if some alleged reports are to be believed, they've been doing this for a long time. That is, sneaking into human civilization, disguised as a human, falling in love with a human lover, and having a child with them, only gradually letting their lover in on their secret when they know they can trust them. Said child born between these couplings will always be a Latios/Latias, on account of the Latios/Latias parent having dominant genes. Albeit these children can use Illusory Refracting to look exactly like a human child, meaning that whether it's the parent or child, your average civilian will never know for sure if they're seeing a human, or a Legendary Pokemon. (Said average civilians don't include Psychics, who can easily distinguish a disguised Latios/Latias from a regular human being.)

( G ) Mega Evolution: Latias are one of 46 different species capable of Mega Evolution. So, to instigate their Mega Evolution, you need the Mega Stone Latiasite. A stone well-distinguished by its purple-magenta pattern.

When the Mega-Stone is used on it, Latias' anatomy changes dramatically. Their legs grow slightly longer, while their arms grow very large Bio-Ramjets inside of them and grow into a pair of wings. This is so because being heavier, they need additional control while flying at high speeds, which they use their arms for. Their actual wings are simply rotated back and folded up against the body, and become what look like lumps on their back. These function as two extra Bio-Ramjets that bring the total up to four. And they grow a purplish down, with their appearance being almost identical to Latios.

Its Special Attack rises from 110 to an impressive 140, because its larger Energy Sac, Nervous Adornments and Bio-Ramjets are able to produce more energy at a time to fuel its offensive power. On one hand, Mega Evolution makes it a good 26 lbs heavier, therefore requiring all that energy to fight AND keep it aloft when in battle. On the other hand, when flying in open air, they become fast. Monumentally fast, even! As in their cruising speed is now 790 mph, while at least one Latias had clocked in at a top speed of Mach 3.41 (2616 mph)!! They can fly even faster in higher altitudes, although don't do so because of how little air there is up there.

However, even more impressive than that is its Special Defense, which comes in at an amazing 150! Whenever a Latias Mega-Evolves, it may find the amount of energy they're producing to be rather excessive, as it's far more than it should possess in nature. Its body begins to stress out due to how much it's producing. To compensate, their bodies grow much denser and sturdier, allowing them to have increasingly high Defense and Special Defense as they grow to resist the harmful effects of their own energy. As a result, they are sturdy enough to resist harm from enemies their own Mega Evolution, and they are heavy enough so that their bodies can exert away enough excess energy, trying to keep themselves aloft.

Trainer Tips:
- If you've caught a Latias, CONGRATULATIONS. I'll have you know that you cannot catch a Latias by force! If it doesn't want to be your Pokemon, it won't! So you're in a good spot if you've managed to convince it to be your friend, or traveling partner.
- If you take a Latias with you on your travels, ASK IF THERE IS A LATIOS NEARBY WHOM IS ITS FRIEND/SIBLING. While they usually live in separate herds, Latios and Latias occasionally join other herds, acting as brothers and sisters of sorts. Regardless of how you get a Latias in your team, Latias have very strong familial bonds with those it holds close to it. Expect yourself to have to meet with her family, and get their okay to take her with you.
- There is a chance that a Latias may develop feelings for you if you're of the opposite sex. If that's the case, EITHER CONFESS AND RECIPROCATE YOUR LOVE TOWARDS THEM, OR LET THEM DOWN GENTLY. Whatever your decision is, make it quick enough so your Latias doesn't agonize over this.
- Even if you're not prepared to have romantic commitment, AT LEAST DO YOUR BEST TO BE ITS FRIEND, AND A GOOD CARETAKER. Latias are pretty understanding, and if you've been able to take one with you, they'd be pretty happy to help you support them and yourself as well. But this also means you can't be lazy or neglectful. They'll know when you're making excuses, and they'll have none of it.
- DO NOT MANHANDLE YOUR LATIAS. Of course, Latias is by no means fragile. But like I said before, its more advanced nervous system causes it to be feel more pain towards physical damage. Don't do stupid crap like try to punch, kick, slap or wrestle your Latias. Besides, that'd incline it to wrestle YOU back into submission via telekinesis.
- BE CONSIDERATE TO YOUR LATIAS' SECRETS. Latias who use Illusory Refracting to disguise themselves as humans do this to fit in better with other normal humans. Please get the message, and don't spout off your Latias' real identity to its neighbors. Even if other people already know about Latias, and regularly accept it into their society, at least be decent enough to keep their identity safe! Especially with jackasses like Team Rocket who wouldn't be very responsible with that kind of info.
- LATIAS CAN KILL YOU. This is a given, knowing that they are Legendary Pokemon. Treat them poorly enough, and an average Latias will have had enough of you that they'll just grab you by the temples, and pour every ounce of psychic energy they can into your noggin. Which usually results in one's grey matter getting turned into a (pardon the pun) noodle soup!
- EVEN IF YOU'RE A WOMAN, LATIAS MIGHT STILL TAKE A LIKING TO YOU. It's very rare, but there have been cases of a Latias growing romantically attached to a human female. So keep an open mind! Same applies to you guys out there with a Latios! There's tales of some big blue bromance, too!
- IF YOU HAVE A PREGNANT LATIAS, CONSIDER A C-SECTION. As it is, pregnant Latias need a lot of love and care to support them, and keep them nice and safe despite not having a disguise to work with. But laying eggs for them is a very arduous and excruciatingly painful task for a Latias that may result in complications. Each egg is about the size of a propane gas tank, because the eggs are nearly ready to hatch by the time they're finally laid. So to prevent error as best as possible, think about giving it a C-Section to preserve the lives of the mother and child.
- NO, LAROUSSE CITY IS ACTUALLY NOT FULL OF LATIAS AND LATIOS. This was actually an error. I thought there was, but it turns out my research equipment was malfunctioning due to all the electric types that reside under the city. Most of the major Latios and Latias herds are nomadic anyway, going from region to region disguised as travelers.
- LATIAS IS YOUR EQUAL, SO ACT LIKE IT. This is a given for most Psychic-Type Pokemon that can communicate with you on a very deep level, but this is even more true for Latias! Once it starts communicating to you via telepathy, then that's the part when you need to realize that the relationship is mutual. Latias is quite good at taking care of itself, but you as a trainer really need to put in effort to make it work for both of you.

Personal Experiences: Now that Team Rocket is no longer a threat, and Team Skull certainly won't be making use of this info any time soon, I wanted to tell you about a very special friend of mine...

Her name's Lera. She's the Latias that formerly guarded Alto Mare, up until the Alto Mare Incident. One whom had felt a very sincere love for a boy by the name of Ash Ketchum, and had pursued him for a very long time before finally getting to join his team. One whom had disguised herself as a human trainer, and amassed a team of Dragon-Type Pokemon and Eeveelutions. And what's more? She's actually one of my best friends nowadays!

I still remember way back in Kalos, when she had actually come to our lab to find out where Ash was, as well as to have a place to stay for the night. And my goodness, that had been the start of many new adventures for Gustav and I! We saved her life from the Team Rocket grunts, Annie and Oakley, as they attempted to fight her with a Shadow Lugia and Latios (who turned out to be fake clones with implanted memories). We've discovered the old remains of her brother Leto and used the Fossil Revival machine to successfully revive him (after gaining his consent via seance). We've went back to Alto Mare and had a Pokemon Battle with her, with Gustav and Boa taking home the win. And now? We're at Kalos. She's recently rejoined Ash (since she wasn't about to let him go on a new adventure while leaving her behind), and is traveling around with him now. And lastly, she was the one who provided me with more information on Latias that I've been REALLY wanting to know for a while! It's times like these that make me especially happy to have her as a friend, and I can surely thank Gustav for that too!

However, there is another particular mindscrew I remember! Several years before the Alto Mare Incident (which I will not be discussing any time soon) some fellow scientists of mine have heard a theory I proposed: that Latios and Latias are so incredibly rare in the wild because in order to reproduce and raise a family, they basically infiltrate human society. Meaning that there could technically be more Latios and Latias living secretly within human civilization than there are Latios and Latias living in the wild. And of course, everyone in the room thought I was drinking seawater or moonshine or whatever, which is par for the course as Professor "TIPSY". Heck, that was a time when Gustav was still a Krokorok, and a time when I had a lot less respect from my peers!

But that time, my fellow scientists decided to humor me in my insane theories, and try and test it out. We were based in Hoenn, so the idea was to covertly set up a network of energy scanners across LaRousse City. A Psychic-Type Pokemon waited by each scanner, to send out a wave of energy that would tell Latios and Latias apart from humans. Said Psychic Pokemon has electrode wires on their head the whole time connecting back to the scanner machine, to feed that information back to it, which gives us a population map in detail.

Long story short, the Psychic-Type Pokemon detect it, the scanner machine displays the results before us. So how DID this test go?

I...felt a pit growing in my stomach. A voice rang out to me screaming out what a horrible idea this was. Not because it failed. But because the results showed it worked.

I do not exaggerate when I say this. The scanners picked up, in LaRousse City alone, a population of at least 277 Latios and Latias. Men, women, children, all disguised in the midst of this big city as completely normal people, for the last decades or even hundreds of years, with NOTHING to distinguish them from normal people. The scanners worked for all about eight seconds, which we took a screenshot and printed it. And then...it scrambled. The data had been mysteriously wiped, and suddenly, the scanners picked up nothing unusual at all. The exact same people were still there, but absolutely nothing could be found. Almost all of our evidence have been destroyed simultaneously, and they didn't break a sweat! All we have now is that one printed out map, and my own observations. And the utterly bewildered team of scientists backing this project up who are just starting to get an idea of what rabbit hole we were all digging ourselves into. All I can do is ask WHY do people keep underestimating how goddamn weird our world is?

But at this point...I got the message. This isn't going public. If you happen to stumble across this information, we humbly request that you don't tell anyone, lest a band of Beheeyem teleport into your room in the middle of the night and erase your memories. Trust me...those who keep official secrets are pretty good at wiping away the evidence. Kind of like what ends up happening to me several times when I find out something I wasn't supposed to!

Nope. False alarm. I actually got confirmation from Lera herself that there actually aren't any Latios and Latias in LaRousse City. She knows so, because she would have already sensed them if they were there. What had actually happened is that the abundance of Electric-Type Pokemon living underneath the city caused my equipment to malfunction in a major way, making it appear as if there were tons of them, then none at all, before all of our data went down the toilet. I...kinda had to break the news to my fellow researchers from back then, and give them my paycheck. They even had the nerve to invite me over for beer pong! Hmph! Imagine that!

I hope Lera knows that if she plans to romance ash, she's got a lot of work ahead of her. that boy's denser than a SNorlax when it comes to matters of the Female heart.

Professor, about the new Latios and Latias on Alto Mare, is the instance something about the devastating Hoopa Unbound incident on a certain city near Dubai?.

Well, you kinda already HAVE made her identity public, bro. Remember that big group shot of her team you did way back when?

So yeah, I think it's pretty much safe to let the Alto Mare stuff go live.

Oh right! I almost forgot!

I guess later on I can update this to include more about Lera, if we presume that it's a time when Lera's not under any particular threat. Y'know, no more Team Rocket at her heels.

Otherwise, hope you liked this extensive report on Latias!

She's pretty much safe from the Rockets now that she's in Alola. And Team Skull or whatever they're called doesn't even know what she is.

Now that I think about it, yeah. She'll be able to handle things well, knowing she's got a trainer. Plus it's not like Team Skull's gonna have any luck against Lera!

Although to this day, Tipsy still can't quite figure out that whole "city full of disguised Latios and Latias" mindscrew that he's kept in his pile of classified files. Just one of a bunch of bizarre findings that make a person question their own reality! ^^

Subj: You have much to learn!

Just saw your newest report, and I have to say, there's a lot of things you still don't know about Latias!

So let's get some of these discrepancies out of the way, shall we?

-What look like a Mega Latias' arms actually are their arms. Their heavier bodies need additional control when flying at high speeds, so they can actually turn their entire wings just by rotating their shoulders. The lumps on their backs are actually additional bio-ramjets, bringing the total to four. Only when Mega Evolved can a Latios go supersonic. (about Mach 1.03) The top speed of a Mega Latias, however, is monumentally faster. I myself One Latias in particular was clocked at Mach 3.41. They're capable of even higher speeds at higher altitudes, but the air is far too thin for them to breathe. The other major factor slowing them down is noise; those bio-ramjets get so loud that prolonged high-speed flight can actually cause hearing loss.

-Latias and Latios protect their faces during high-speed flight by using their own spin on a "Concorde mask", that is, an invisible barrier of psychic energy is projected in front of their faces.

-The most recent Latios and Latias were the only ones trained by a Lugia. Training the two is usually Rayquaza's duty.

-Latias and Latios gradually stopped breeding with one another because their eggs were starting to get bigger. By the time they discovered that humans were a viable alternative, thousands of Latias had already died due to birth complications. This is also the same phenomenon that claims the lives of so many Marowak.
Even to this day, laying eggs is an arduous and excruciatingly painful task for a Latias. Each egg is about the size of a propane gas tank, because the eggs are nearly ready to hatch by the time they're finally laid. Further compounding the problem was that a pregnant Latias can't muster up enough psychic energy to form their human disguise. This left them easy pickings for predators.

-Trainer Tips:

-A Latias can fucking kill you!    Yep, treat them poorly enough, and an average Latias will have had enough of your shit that they'll just grab you by the temples, and pour every ounce of psychic energy they can into your noggin. Which usually results in one's grey matter getting turned into..... *snort* NOODLE SOUP.

-Even if you're a woman, a Latias might still take a liking to you!    It's super rare, but there have been cases of a Latias growing romantically attached to a human female. So keep an open mind! Same applies to you guys out there with a Latios! There's tales of some big blue bromance, too!

-LaRousse City is NOT full of Latias and Latios. Your equipment was malfunctioning due to all the electric types that reside under the city. Most of the major Latios and Latias herds are nomadic, going from region to region disguised as travelers.

Phew, I talked a lot! Hope some of this helps you!

Subj: Re: You have much to learn!

Oooh geez, I really do, don't I? Holy moly is this a lot of info that I didn't have access to at the time I wrote this! In hindsight, I should've probably asked you first before writing this, but as it is, Legendary Pokemon are a special kind of difficult to study. In any case, you have done me a great service!

- For a while, I was baffled at Mega Latias- anatomy, because it looked as though their arms disappeared entirely while their wings became arms. But it seems that what happens instead are that Mega Latias' arms become wings, to provide more control in flight, while the actual wings fold back, and become additional bio-ramjets with which to provide greater speed. At least I THINK I'm getting it. Because their arms get awfully bulgy for them to NOT have bio-ramjets in them.

- That whole "Latios and Latias can't reproduce" was a conundrum that took me FAR too long to figure out. And to think that there was a facet that I didn't pick up on even then! I have realized that the phenomenon that have made Marowak mortality rates so high was larger eggs and smaller birth canals, but I didn't know the same problem plagued Latias. Huh! This explains an awful lot to be honest.

- AND....that LaRousse City Map. You know, I knew something about this was incredibly weird. TOO weird. And there was the fact that there was no way to check our facts because our equipment and data went kaput immediately after usage! So I was left to assume for years on end that LaRousse City was in fact populated by Latios and Latias! Geez...no wonder people think I drink on the job. At the very least, I'm glad to have finally put that mystery to bed with a reliable source!

In any case, I wanna thank you for all of the great info, and for helping me out in my research!

-Hugs back from Alola and your dearest, drunkest friendly neighborhood Professor, Tipsy

PS: Gave him a treat! Gotta go vacuum up the crumbs off the floor.
