Description Well, cleaner, at least.

I just let this render while I was gone away to the granparents' house. YafRay is being so very slow, but I don't care. It's as free as the air I'm breathing, and that's good enough for me. The render is taking so long because of all the refractions and reflections off of the derived objects (plexiglass, chrome), and the has to go through all of that. So you have GI rays going through 5 or 6 steps just to make it to the floor (and then bounce back again...depth was set to 3).

New computer over the summer. Definitely a Mac. Yes.

Specs:
Created in Blender 3D and rendered with YafRay for 50:06:44.66 at 1000x750. //Blargh
Postpro: Signature
Modeling: All modeling by me. Verts/Faces/Objects: 57908/58814/51. NURBS objects to not contribute to this count.
Textures: Blender basic shaders
Renderer: GI, glowlight, soft shadows, volumetrics.

very very beatiful.
i like the shapes of that stair!!! and the materials!!

perhaps you could increase the samples for better lighting quality..

cheers!

You know, the balusters kill it. At most you could have just fixed the rail onto the wall rather than suppporting them with balusters. Great render otherwise.

TjGk In reply to Sampdoria [2006-07-08 17:57:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah, but if you look closely, you'll see that the banister is fixed to the wall, which then supports the stairs on one side with the balusters. I do see what you're saying, though. I tried it without and liked the minimalism, but decided to go with my intuition on physical possibility. I do regret having to do it, and now that I think about it, would rather have just supported the construction more on that one side.

Thanks for the comment!

looks really good, i like the plexiglass a lot.

the GI-solution is a bit patchy though.

If you think that's bad, check out the rendertime

Not the highest quality, but with all of the reflections / refractions it needs a lot of time. You can rest assured that if the stairs were opaque, it would be a lot cleaner.

Yep, maybe when I'm going away again I'll do another render of this beast. I just can't tie up my computer for that amount of time while I'm here

Aye, stay clear of the Macs, unless you want to increase your render times...

A technical point, though. The GI rays can't go through 5 or 6 steps and then bounce back, if they're only set to 3...? So while there's a lot of math going on here, it's not making it all the way through the scene. Of course increasing it will dramaticall increase render times, but Yafray is still pretty awesome, especially considering the price!

Down the road, if you get a chance to use Maya or Mental Ray, you'll see the difference vastly. But in the meantime, keep up your awesome work! I eagerly await the "finished" version of this scene, my friend. It's coming along nicely, and again, I love the design and concept!

3 raydepth as in 3 GI bounces...a refraction doesn't count as a bounce A bounce would be if the ray hit a reflective or nonreflective surface and didn't go through it. They hold GI to a different set of parameters than photons.

See my post above about that Mac...laptop first (won't be rendering on that), then workstation later. I'm really in a deadlock about it. I should learn how to rig up a render farm...

Once I get to college, hopefully I can pick up both Maya and mental ray for cheap. Then I shall behold the power

Rerender has definitly helped. A mac you say..? If you are a logical person I would stay clear, the interface is very easy to use, but quite unlogical. I really can't cope with them. Still, they are very pretty...

Well, the school that I'm going to (RIT) uses almost exclusively Macs. They have student discounts on Macs and Mac software.

Have you had any experiences with Mac laptops? That's what I need to get next, a laptop. Then maybe a workstation next summer or the middle of the last semester. So, that's...$3,500 + $9,000...ouch.

/Yes, I do like having the best.
//Might as well get good stuff now so it isn't out of date the following year.
///I'm going to be paying those off for years.

Mac laptops, no. I would remember what you are looking for with a laptop and why you are getting it over a desktop, because if you are not careful you can get a laptop that isn't as powerful as a desktop and about as portable as a desktop. Oh, and remember to keep the laptop off your lap...

TjGk In reply to 7LwemLz7JuALnzEZkNLg [2006-04-17 12:37:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, yes, I do need a laptop. I'll still have my desktop at school, it will just be becoming more outdated every day.

I'm thinking about a MacBook Pro (the 2.16GHz, 2Gb RAM). They're thin as hell for what they can do, but they cost a lot. Hoorah for student discount!

I saw this thing up at Best Buy one day that plugs into the laptop. It's like a pad you set it on with fans imbedded in it, so all of the heat gets expelled to the front of you instead of downward. I'm still trying to decide whether or not the cost of battery power is worth it.

Oh...did I say slow? Well then by slow I meant fast. Really fast. Like light speed. I turn away from the monitor for a second and it's finished. Then I'm like, whoa.

Nothing that can't be fixed with a render farm

I like it! Especially the glass stair steps. Although it would be better off without the light source at the top.

TjGk In reply to samzkuul [2006-04-16 18:14:37 +0000 UTC]

I agree about the top LS, but that's just the light from the sky. The GI then bounces all of that light around the room to make it brighter. Come to think of it, I should have made a window or two in the downstairs wall. I thought about it earlier and decided against it because I wanted it to be more like a basement...

/Thanks for the comment
