Description
Taken at Beaver Marsh, Cuyahoga Valley National Park - Akron, OHThis morning I noticed that the clouds had passed and the biting wind had passed us by, leaving a sparkly snowland with blue skies. So I bundled up (because it was still cold, don't get me wrong!) in my snowpants, three layers of "keep you warm in subzero temps" shirts and new gloves and went out to shoot this beautiful landscape.
Beaver Marsh is always a peaceful place and it didn't disappoint this morning. The cold did keep out all but the most dedicated of people (read: photographers) and so I got to chat up photography with three folks and one lady with a face mask, scarf and sunglasses.
I liked the monochromatic feel of this shot in black and white with the snow and the sky. I used a circular polarizer to bring out the blue of the sky (isn't it so blue?? What can't you tell?!) and a tripod for extra stability--black and white applied in post processing.

And I can see why.

it. The absence of any real colour really does enhance this image

Thank you! Most times I always want more and more color out of my photos and then there are views like this that just belong in black and white.

I see why you laughed at my 56 degree "cold front" Right now we are 72 degrees and the coldest it is supposed to get is 57 degrees on Monday.. You are a braver soul than I am for venturing out in this..heck, I hibernate when it's in the 50's..we cajuns aren't used to such "extreme" temps!!!

LOL Oh yes. We had a "balmy" 38 degrees today and my husband said "Really, you're going to start a fire?" Well DUH. I totally could deal with the "getting down to" 57 degrees.

Very nice! I can't wait to get back out to Beaver Marsh for some winter shots. Once the holidays are over (and my kids aren't sniffling and sneezing) I plan on getting back out there.

Thank you! I think I definitely want to go back out there again in the morning--I may wait this this weekend when it's supposed to get a TAD warmer. LOL

It's beautiful! I love the contrast and how it really makes everything stand out! I even love the foot prints.

Thanks so much! That was one of my favorite parts of being down there, seeing all the footprints in the snow around you. It lets you know what's around to keep an eye out for! While shooting this I looked down a ways and saw a doe step out, but she was gone, scared by some runners before I could get the zoom lens out.

You're welcome. Glad you got to see the doe, even if it was just for a moment.

The sky is fantastic. And I really like the single set of tracks over the pristine snow. Lovely shot!

Thank you! I admit that the tracks in the snow drew me too, just moving across the ice and snow. I think on the far left it's a combination of bunny and deer tracks and then the deer went on alone.

I have to ask though: is it just me, or is the horizon slightly askew here? I ask, only because I've seen in your other shots of the same location and they also look slightly askew, but I figure it's just the trees or the waterline playing tricks on my eyes. My sense is that this is just one of those places in the world where things don't line up on a grid, no matter how much I want them to. And that's fine, but I really have to resist tilting the monitor.

Argh now that you say it, I see it. Part of it is the distortion of the lens, at 16mm I'm getting into some decent curvature, but where it should be straight, it's not and I have NO excuse as my viewfinder has lines in it to help me get things as level as possible. I'm going to have to fix that now!!

Sorry, didn't mean to make more work for you! FWIW, I'm irritatingly obsessive about things being level. I still love the shot.

LOL no apologies necessary, I like it when people point out things like that for me because it causes me to be wary of them when I'm out shooting too. It helps me improve and makes my photos better so it's a good thing that you're obsessive as it'll lead me to be obsessive too!
The one thing that always stymies me is when I have my wide angle on and shoot something that has straight vertical and horizontal lines and then I wonder WHICH ONE DO I MAKE LEVEL??!! LOL

It does! Though I got back and was very disappointed to find some vignetting that I had to crop out and then make adjustments in camera for some high vignette control. I'll be playing with it today to see if it helps clear up the corners some.
