Description Green Tree Python
Taken at the Akron Zoo - Akron, OH

Despite a similar photo like this winning 2nd place in the Akron Zoo's Shutterbug contest this year, I still felt it needed something more--more mood or depth I think, though there certainly wasn't anything wrong with the first one.

Getting these shots end up being easier that it might seem, when you think about low light and then adding macro lenses on top of that where if you breathe that the subject gets out of focus...But when the snake is on a branch on the other side of the glass at the perfect distance...well, one simply rests the lens on the glass as a stabilizer and voila!

I really do like this one better, the darker shadows to this gives it a sense of depth and mood that the other didn't, in my personal opinion. The other just seems flat compared to this, even if the other shows off more detail on the green tree python.

Here is the other one for comparison, from my Scraps:

Edit: Oh my goodness!! Thanks so much for the DD on this and thank you to everyone in advance for your of it! I am so very very honored by the DD and everyone's love for it!

Thank you so much for not only the pros to this, but the things you think are cons as well, I really appreciate that honesty! It's always extremely interesting to hear what things in a photo weren't liked as much as what was so that I can keep those sorts of things in mind when I'm shooting the next photo. So thank you!

Wow! This is a great picture. The shot is great, along with the immense shading and blur affects. In this image, the amazing details are clearly visible, such as the scales, the face, and the slit eyes. I really like how the image is just focused on the snake, and not on its surroundings and habitat. I also like the angle of the shot, for the snake seems to be staring right at me with those eyes! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> This is utterly amazing, and I'm at a loss for anymore works. Great shot, and keep up the good work, for it's really paying off!

Thank you so much!! Working in macro is always tricky because if you're off just a hair, the whole photo is messed up and I tried hard for a good angle and focus...I'm glad that it paid off and you liked it!

I can definitely see how your other photo won a prize, especially with the blue light reflecting off of the snake's skin. But this one is a lot more abstract--apart from the snake's head, it would be hard to tell what the subject of the picture is at first glance, other than glistening green coils, and I think that this semi-abstract element really adds to the picture. I like how all of the colors in the picture are variations on the color green--even the shadows look like they are very dark green, rather than black. I also love how the depth of field is so shallow that the snake's body goes from out of focus to in focus to out of focus again just in a short stretch of coil. This is a really gorgeous shot, and if you ever enter it into a contest, it had better win.
