Description
"Now, don't you go around startin' any forest fires, you hear?"One day, I was looking at a fire hydrant. I looked at the ports on the side and thought that they looked like places that arms would come out of. I then thought of the top of the hydrant as a hat. One thought led to another, and eventually, this concept was born.
This is a character who I am currently dubbing The Forest Fire Hydrant. I don't really have a better name for the fellow right now. In case I didn't make it clear (which is certainly possible), he's a weird tree fellow who is also part fire hydrant and works as a forest ranger. I wanted this character to seem like he could appear in silly forest fire prevention and forest conservation PSAs, like good old Smokey the Bear.
I tried a couple of new things with this. First off, I tried to design this character to be reminiscent of old cartoons from the western side of the world, what with the tube limbs and the giant gloves. I've always loved that style, and I've wanted to design a character or two in that style for some time now. The other new thing that I did with this was tracing my linework with a marker instead of the usual pen. I've gotten a couple of recommendations to make my outlines thicker, so that's what I was going for. Personally, I think it actually worked out very well. This might be one of my best outlining jobs yet so far!
With all of that being said, I'm pretty happy with how this came out. It's still far from being as good as it could be, but it still came out very satisfactory.
Any and all constructive criticism is highly appreciated!
