Description
These are two motifed character ideas for magicians that I came up with and decided to draw. The character on the left is a 1920's American mobster-esque magician themed after billiards and... well, 1920's American mobsters. His name is "Magic 8 the Great." He casts spells in the form of magic billiard balls using his magic staff, which is a cue stick (Also known as that thing that you use to launch billiard balls in... well, billiards.). Each ball has different properties, and Magic 8 has one for every number of ball in billiards except for ball #8 because... well... he already has his head. Stern, serious, and speaking like a stereotypical 1920's American mobster, Magic 8 leads a gang of billiard-themed knights and considers himself their "king," which is really just his justification for calling them knights in the first place.
The character on the right is a painting themed magician whose name is mostly undecided. I've settled on "Pastel" for now, but I really dislike that one and want to come up with something better.* She is a summoner/rune magician who summons creatures to do the fighting for her by painting them onto a canvas via magic paint. She stores these paints in tiny canisters and on a paint palette.** Cheery and optimistic, Pastel likes to lighten up people's days and just make them happy.
You know, I actually drew the line-art for both of these characters during a car ride while the car was moving. I was headed to visit a University that I had applied to and decided to draw for part of the drive. Considering how difficult it can be to write legibly in a moving car, let alone draw, these came out very well. They obviously could be better - especially the line-art for the painting magician - but I'm still pleased with the final results.
I definitely owe a big part of the quality of the finalized line-art to Barthimo1. I used a drawing technique that he used on some of his animating livestreams, where he would draw the lines in an almost dotted line fashion. It's a difficult technique to explain, so I'd recommend finding his Twitch account and watching one of his stream recordings there and see if you can catch an instance where he uses it. I am definitely using the technique again in the future because it works super well.
I'm personally more satisfied with Magic 8's line-art than Pastel's (and I'm also more satisfied with his name... ugh.). In fact, I'm thinking of revising Pastel's design a bit. The bucket helmet looks way too similar to that paint bucket character from Paper Mario: Color Splash, and I think that's for the worse. I also have a good idea for a hat that she could wear, and I'd like to draw her with her canvas and palette. The rest of the design came out well, though, even if the drawing quality is iffy.
*Maybe you could give me some suggestions!
